“Great food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2013

We enjoy going to Chris McD's...especially when tomatoes are in season as the tomato and cheese "salad" is wonderful...we have always found the food to be very tasty. Most of the time we have found the service to be attentive. The outside of the restaurant does not look very appealing as it is located in a strip mall...but the inside is tastefully decorated.
Recently attended a party in the back room, and the food prepared for that even was delicious.

“Such great food, pity about the staff.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2013

Been going here for years, have always loved the food and the service. It seems like in the last year or so the turnover rate for the servers has gone way up. Every time we go to dine there a new person is taking care of us, had trouble understanding why given the caliber of the place.

On one occasion, though, (a weekend night), we were seated in a booth kind of close to the kitchen. It was really busy, and our food was taking a while. We heard fits of screaming coming from the kitchen with multiple expletives mixed in, and every time a server walked out the doors their face would change from a scowl to a forced smile. When we asked our waitress why the food was taking so long, she told us that they sat too many tables at one time and that things usually gets slowed down when that happens. We asked her how long she had been working there, and she told us "two months". Right after that we heard more yelling. She gave us a polite smile, turned and walked back into the kitchen. It continued like this throughout the meal.

The food was great as always when we finally got it, but when I go out to eat (especially if I'm spending good money) I don't want to see or hear what goes on behind the scenes. It was just uncomfortable. That was the first time we had ever been seated that close to the kitchen, and if that is how their staff is treated I can understand why there are new faces so often when we dine there.

“First and last visit”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 23, 2013

Finally made it to the resturant we had been told was one of the best. The service person was excellent. The food was not prepared very well and the "specials" were not very special and frakly overpriced. I am always sorry to give a place a poor review but will not try this one again.

“Great service. Very good find!”

Well we are at the bar but were just stopping in for a cocktail. Ordered 2 small plates the bartender suggested both outstanding. Had a bottle of nice red and were well taken care of. Bartender mentioned it was his first night....never would have known! Good trout special!

“Columbia's Best Prepared Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2013

The only reason Chris McD's is not rated #1 in Columbia is because it has so few reviews. For whatever reason, most of the people who eat there are from Columbia and they apparently tend not to rate hometown places. The restaurant is celebrating 22 years in business in 2013. No restaurant stays in business 22 years without being a continuously special place to eat for a lot of people.
We have always had truly fabulous food there and at reasonable prices. Tonight, we had salads, two smaller plates and two excellent glasses of wine for $58 without tip. I had the superb braised pork shank, a "smaller" plate I was unable to finish. All of the plates are truly innovative and use fresh ingredients.
They have a large menu and it is not easy to select from so many delicious options. For the entrees, they offer two options: "smaller" and regular. But the smaller entrees are not just tiny versions of the regular entrees. They differ notably and are more than enough to eat for most people..
The wine list is extensive, clearly organized and reasonably priced. A glass of wine is a GLASS of wine, not a couple of sips.
The restaurant is and always has been located in a strip shopping mall easily accessible from anywhere in town. Perhaps the location might turn off some, but it's in a nice area of town with an upper end supermarket, nice small and large shops and a university extension. It is not some seedy strip mall in the wrong part of town.
We don't eat out a lot in Columbia because we travel a lot and like to eat home cooking when home. But when we want to eat extremely well prepared food in Columbia, there is only one place:Chris McD's. The restaurant is named after the chef and it fully deserves his name.We enjoy good food at home and when we eat out and when we go out our number one pick in Columbia is this place.
