“Very clean, pet friendly hotel, great location!”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

This has been our favorite St. Louis area hotel to stay in for the past several years. It is in downtown Clayton, within walking distance of many upscale restaurants and bars. We prefer staying in Clayton over downtown St. Louis because this is a very safe and upscale area even at night. We have come up here both with our 2 kids, and without, and we have enjoyed it every time. We also like that this hotel is very pet friendly which helps us out as well. As others have said, parking is $14 per night, and you can add internet for $1 more. If you are staying on a weekend, it is very easy to get street parking if you are so inclined, and meter parking is free on Saturday and Sunday. There are parking meter spots right in front of the hotel.

Room Tip: We have mostly booked through priceline at the 3.5 star level. I have yet to try booking straight...

We booked two rooms for six people, at a discount, through Hotwire. One room was supposed to be a double queen for mom & dad and two kids. They had instead set us up in a total of two TINY singles, and after some rather lengthy debate and adjustment - and an additional $50 a night (times five nights!) we had one room changed to a King "Suite" on the "Club Level" with hide-a-bed and rollaway. There was not enough room in this "suite" for the hide-a-bed to come out with the rollaway there. Note to Sheraton (who should know better): Americans expect a "Suite" to be a little bigger than 12' x 20'. The hide-a-bed was so old and unsupportive we elected to leave it folded up and have one kid sleep on the couch. There were no linens for the hide-a-bed/couch, and when I called the desk at about 7 PM it took 55 minutes for them to come up - without a blanket. Evidently others had the same experience with discount bookings as we saw two other families in the short time we were in the lobby with the same complaint.

That said, the rollaway was nicer than most single beds in homes. The room was cleanish except the tired carpet was stained. Obviously the spacious suite had been used as the gathering place for those parties whose rooms were, ahem, less "Kingly".

The one afternoon when we made the mistake of leaving the curtains open we came back to a 80 degree room; after that we closed them and set the air to 63 and it was comfortable when we returned at night.

Shower water temp and pressure was outstanding. I've seen some complaints on here about the elevators but they were not that bad; we were on the 12th floor and we waited three minutes once, the rest of the times it was not a delay. Perhaps some folks should consider quitting the whining and taking the stairs, they could use the exercise. (yes I took the stairs up the nine flights)(once) =)
If you're going to a Cards game, there is a train station easy walking distance - about five blocks - away. The only warning is that you may have to wait an hour in line for a return train, and it's too far for the hotel's shuttle to come get you. The hour wait went by fast and I'd probably do it again.

The "Club Level" allows you to go up to the 14th floor lounge and have breakfast and "Social Hour", hosted by a most cheerful, friendly, and conscientious girl named Demori, on our visits. There are finger foods (including the famous StL Fried Ravioli) at night along with wines and beers for self serve. I guess the amount of wine we drank made up for the $50 upcharge at check-in. At breakfast guests use a high-tech automatic macchina to make their own espresso and cappuccino, which was great, and they have a large trough of those special watery hotel scrambled eggs, and either biscuits & gravy, or french toast sticks, waffles and/or home fries.
We stayed over the July fourth weekend and it was never crowded in the Club Level Lounge.

The service in the downstairs (main) bar was less than stellar. When a guest arrives, the bartender should not ignore guests because she's making change for another employee - counting cash for five minutes - and then make drinks without washing her hands.

There is a huge indoor pool, and a small but well-equipped fitness center which were never crowded and which we visited a lot, the kids loved the pool. You can be entertained while you swim by a 6'5" pool attendant who acts like the towels weigh fifty pounds each, and walks so slowly it is absolutely comical. Watch, too, as he picks up those used fifty-pound towels from the pool deck, re-folds them, and puts them in the stack of "clean" towels. Really, how hard is it, dude?!
Mostly, though, all the staff with whom we interacted (except this guy and the bartender) were friendly, professional and excellent representatives of this grand hotel, though. Tim at the desk and Demori upstairs were especially helpful.

Regarding the complaints about the parking; if you can't maneuver your car proficiently enough to get around the admittedly tight lot exit, you should probably not be driving on public roads.

I'd advise going for the "Club Level" if you want a nice breakfast that's ready whenever you are (as long as it's between 6:30 and 9:30 weekdays or 7:30 to 10:30 weekends) and a "free" happy hour to relax and meet up with the others in your group in the evenings (six to nine PM I think). I'd certainly stay at this Sheraton again.

Room Tip: Close the curtains during the day on west-facing rooms in the summer or it'll be hot when you co...

I booked a room through priceline and stayed at this hotel for 1 night. Like all big hotels, there were very few complimentary amenities. Parking also costs $14 with unlimited in and out privileges. Internet wasn't free although there were computers for guest to use in the lobby. I ended up paying $10 per day to park at a parking garage just down the street. This garage probably had no in and out privileges but I was parking for the night so it wasn't a problem. We got two beds in our room, which were very comfortable as were the pillows. The starbucks coffee pods in the room made up for no free coffee in the lounge. The indoor pool on the 5th floor was pretty massive and the kids enjoyed swimming there. All in all, I had few complaints but free internet would have been good.

We booked the hotel through Priceline and were put in a room with one bed. Luckily we were able to get a roll away bed for our kids. Most of the time when we turned the TV on it was a blank screen. We had to constantly unplug the TV to get the picture to appear. Parking was $14/day plus $1/day for Internet in the room. The best part of the room was the bathroom. It was nicely updated. One day our room was not serviced and our towels were not replaced. We called down to the front desk to get some clean towels and they acted like we were lying about it not being cleaned.

A surprise in St. Loui

This property was a pleasant surprise from location, to room comfort, to food, service and overall ambiance.
From the moment I reached the front desk I was welcomed with a smile, my status was recognized, my room was upgraded without asking and I was offered a complimentary appetizer.
What else do you expect in St. Louis?

We stayed here for a swim meet. The location was great and there are plenty of close restaurant options. We tried eating dinner at the hotel one night but were in a hurry. The service was clearly going to be slow, so we moved on to another restaurant. This seems to be an older property but it is well maintained. The pool was nice and big which was welcomed by the kids. Our swim team reserved a block with a nice discount. After finding out what the regular rate was, I would not stay here at those prices. However, under the reduced price, this was a good stay.

Located in the heart of the business/office/government area of suburban Clayton, this property is very convenient and within walking distance of all Clayton office buildings. Several ( over 20 ) excellent restaurants and trendy, upscale bars also very close. Old property that has been very well maintained, but the age shows. Staff was friendly and efficient while possibly missing the chance to go the "extra mile". Parking, which based on type of room reserved, can be free, or a $10 charge. Either way, the garage is difficult to navigate and the exit is into some type of alley. The room was very clean, king bed very comfortable, and everything worked perfectly. All things considered, especially getting a room rate for under $100., this is a decent value hotel for a business or pleasure visit.

Thank you for the 4 star rating. The team will work hard to earn the 5th star when you visit us again. We appreciate your very complete commentary about the hotel; especially as it pertains to the Staff being friendly and efficient. The friendliness of our Associates is what differentiates us from other hotels in the area. I promise they will not miss the opportunity to go the “extra mile” when you visit us again.

Thank you again for the comments. We do look forward to your next visit.

Sincerely,

Ron Juneman
