“Great addition to the Clayton restaurant scene”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2012

Gerard Craft did a wonderful job of creating a restaurant with so many personalities- you can come with kids, with girlfriends, with couples, or just one other. It is in a great location in the middle of Clayton and has a big open kitchen, and a wall of windows facing a street. I hope they think about adding patio dinning in the summer. The service has always been attentive and quick, even when it was packed. Plan to get there very early if you don't want to wait... and the small bar is a drawback. The waiting space is cramped for sure. On a Wednesday night I went with three kids and we were seated right away at 520pm but by 6pm the waiting area was chaos. The pizzas are all so tasty and I love the shrimp salad. We will be back often.

“Lives up to the hype”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2012

I ate here with a few friends on a busy Monday evening. The tall ceilings and open air kitchen with bar seating are very inviting. We sat at the bar and watched the kitchen function like a well choreagraphed dance. The head chef was in the kitchen and making pizzas with the enormous brick laden pizza oven. It means a lot to see the proprietor actually working. The menu was well organized with pasta dishes, pizza, salads and appetizers. We tried the rissotto balls, a few pizzas, a pasta dish and the gelato. All were fantastic! The portion size was spot on, big but won't leave you feeling bloated. Most importantly the house made pasta was al dente perfect. I would happily recommend anyone try this place. Go early.

“Gerard Craft hits another one out of the park”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2012

My wife and I have anxiously awaited the opening of Craft's new Pastaria restaurant for months. We visited on a Saturday night around 6:45PM and waited for approximately 40 minutes. During the wait we had a few drinks at the bar, which is very well stocked. As we were waiting, a pasta chef walked by with a pan full of raviolis...he asked me what kind of beer I was drinking, complimented it and then asked us both if we would like to try some of the gelatos while we waited. While we were sampling a few of them (The basil gelato is incredible) he also cut up some fresh sopressata from Salume Beddu. When we were seated our waitress was very friendly and attentive....she was also able to help us decide on what we wanted to order. We ordered the crispy risotto balls and the shaved kale salad as appetizers, both of which were out of this world. My wife had the toasted spaghetti (clams, butter, white wine, garlic, etc.) as her entree, and I had the strozzapeti (Pastaria Bolognese). The quantity was abundant, and the flavor was out of this world. We both had enough to take home for another meal, which was pretty nice as the leftovers reheated very well.

We look forward to returning back to Pastaria to try out some of their other menu items....their pizza, in particular, looked phenomenal. A great visit, overall!

“Good Food, BAD Service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2012

Visited about 3 weeks after the restaurant opened.
The food is very good. There is a large area behind glass where you can watch fresh pasta being made and when we arrived chef/owner Gerard Craft was making tortellini. There are seats in front of the kitchen area where you can watch the food preparation too.

The margherita pizza was wonderful--Neopolitan style--thin crisp but chewy crust with fresh mozzarella and basil. The best we've had in St. Louis (but definitely not St. Louis style pizza).
The pistachio ravioli had complex flavors and a wonderful fresh pasta bite. The toasted spaghetti (the semolina is toasted before being made into the pasta) needed more sauce--it was a bit dry but the taste and texture of the pasta was great.

There is a gelato area with all fresh-made products which they encourage you to taste.

The service was the downfall of our visit. Our server took at least 10 minutes to come over to our table telling us he didn't realize we were his table. We could not get a refill of iced tea, had a long wait for our check and overall felt overlooked.

We will definitely go back but hopefully the service will improve.

“We Will Be Back ... Soon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2012

New restaurant in Clayton. Fresh-made pasta, gelato bar, big portions, great food and service. Some of the noodle names were not familiar to us, but they all were really good. The four of us split the Crispy Risotto Balls. Very nice! Then my wife and I split the Chopped Salad. For main courses, she had Pistachio Ravioli and I had Strozzapreti "Pastaria Bolognee." Both were excellent and enough for us to take home for a second meal the next day. Dessert consisted of three different scoops of gelato: salt-carmel, pistachio, and Mounds ... all made here. We waited about a half hour for our table ... no reservations. But it was well worth the wait. This one is a keeper.
