I have stayed at this hotel twice in the past six months, as well as previously a few years back. All stays have been excellent. I am aware that some others report poor experiences here, and I cannot speak to those. Our several visits have been wonderful. This review reports on those, and does not intend to contradict anyone else's experiences.
This property is an inn, really--almost a large bed and breakfast--and not a typical hotel in any sense. There are probably no more than 25 rooms. The halls are narrow, and access to most rooms is by narrow, twisting stairs. You (or the bellman) carry your luggage up and down. There are no elevators that I am aware of. It is an older, quaint design. Some will not like it.
The Seven Gables is located in downtown Clayton, Missouri, about 10 miles west of downtown St. Louis. If you have business in Clayton or just love inns as opposed to large convention hotels or cookie-cutter limited service hotels on the beltways, consider this place. If not, you might want to look elsewhere.
The inn has been remodeled within the past few years, and they have done a good job. The rooms are nice, well appointed, and large. Breakfast is provided in a light and airy space on the first floor; it was good. There is a bar and restaurant also on the first floor near the street. Some have complained about the noise from that facility. When I was there last, it seemed they closed about 10 or 11 p.m., so they may be responding to those complaints. On the other hand, there are numerous bars and restaurants walking distance from the inn, so good food and drink are never far away.
Service was top-flight in our experience. Reservations were easy. It's a small property, though, so I would recommend checking their web site and then reserving by phone directly with the inn and calling ahead shortly before your stay to confirm. Parking is valet only, and there is a charge. Rates were reasonable at the times we were there. They may honor some discounts such as AAA at certain times and not at others.
There is no pool, no hot tub, and no exercise facility; the hotel staff may be able to set you up with something nearby, but I don't know. I am not sure about business facilities; I did see one computer for email and printer set up in the breakfast room downstairs. They may have wireless internet service in the rooms, but I didn't use it. There is no cavernous lobby, no multitude of desk clerks, and no velvet-roped check-in lines. What there is, is personalized service by friendly folks who will learn your name and want to make your stay the best it can be.
