“Traveling Rt. 66 ..stop and stay!!”
Reviewed July 11, 2014

We had a nice visit while in Joplin this past May. We just happen to be there on the reopening of Boot's birthday. Deb was nice enough to show us around and give us a lot of history. While there we meet Ron “Tattoo 66 Man” Jones, who was also spending the night.
How nice that rooms have been restored and the process is still ongoing. You might want to call ahead and reserve a room. Clean and quiet. Enjoy your stay!

Thank you for your comments! You are right - we are in the process of restoring two more rooms in the front building, built in the early 1940s. These rooms saw much more hard use than those in the back building, so their restoration is more complicated, but we plan to #5, and #6 (the "other" Clark Gable room, where he stayed during WWII) ready for guests soon. Please come by again and watch the progress! Ron Hart, our talented and dedicated restoration contractor, is always happy to show guests his work.

You may need to make advanced reservations to get one of the five currently restored rooms. The one we stayed in was absolutely gorgeous! The wood floors and bathroom tile are original as were the small table and built-in vanity. Both wood pieces were made my Mr. Boots himself. Everything in the room was in pristine condition. Rooms have air conditioning, free radio (set to an oldies station) and wifi. This is a "must do" along Route 66!

Boots is high on the list if you are doing Route 66...so retro. It is being lovingly restored, a few rooms at a time. The original black and white bathroom tiles are highlighted with b&w towels. Everything is extremely clean. An old time radio is playing when you enter your room. We had a large room, hardwood floors. A photo of Kate Smith on the wall! Debbie Dee is a wealth of information on sites to see in Carthage. She recommended the local drive-in (movies shown on Fri, Sat, and Sun.). Locals line up for the double-bill well before the entry time of 8:45pm. Such fun, bringing back old memories of going to drive-in movies as a kid. Only downside was beds a bit too soft. Boots was celebrating its anniversary and Debbie shared cupcakes with us, decorated with rings from the movie"Cars". Had a great time here.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know what you liked about Boots Court and what you thought could use improvement. For us, owning the Boots is like having a never-ending house party, with a constrant stream of friends stopping by for a visit! We wish we could provide each guest with exactly the right bed for that person, but, with so many different needs, we have to go with sort of a middle ground. I do apologize, though, that your sleep quality was not all you had hoped. Maybe next time, you'll get a different bed! We do hope to see you again at the Boots.

We began our stay by talking with Deb Dee, the onsite manager, who was so friendly and welcoming and full of interesting stories. The Boots itself had been rescued by her friends, and they are in the process of restoring it to its 1940's heyday. When we entered our room, we stepped back in time. The room was large and decorated right out of the 40's. Our room had the original bathroom fixtures, the original vanity bench for the built in vanity, and an antique chenille spread. The room did have an air conditioner (a nod to modern times - iced air), and wifi, which we didn't use. As we entered the room, the radio was playing oldies, and the room was diffused with the soft glow of a welcoming lamp. The floors were original hardwood with a floor heater like the one in my grandmother's house. Originally, the guests would have parked under the room in a garage, or else in the carports outside of the (unrestored) rooms. Now we parked right outside our door. We didn't stay in either the room that Clark Gable or Gene Autry stayed in, but we could imagine the pleasure that those celebrities had experienced at the motel. All the details, down to the homey towels were included. The only drawback was that the shower head was too short even for us (5 foot 2)..

Room Tip: This is not a hotel if you just want to crash for the night. This is a motel to give you a one of a...

We loved it here. Super friendly, Debbie Dee provided a little tour and history of the motel. Currently there were five rooms that were beautifully restored. Debbie Dee also gave us all kinds of information on what to do in Carthage and sent us over to Read Oak II where we got to meet Lowell Davis. This is a gem and a little piece of Route 66 which is being preserved. An excellent stop if you are passing through this area.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good. Just be sure to bring you ear plugs because it's near a corner with lots...

I went by the Boots Court in 2007. I stopped, took a picture and dreamed what it would have been like to stay there. I figured the place was on the icon chopping block. I was happy when I found the Boots had been bought and renovation had started. My dream came true this past weekend. My wife and I stayed at the Boots for our wedding anniversary. We had a great time. Loved the music on the radio(KDMO, 1490AM). No TV, hey it's 1949. Our room was very clean. The decor was great including the bedspreads and towels. Oh yeah, no carpet. Remember it's 1949. Deb, the onsite manager, is a very nice lady. We enjoyed visiting with her. She is very informative of places to eat and places and sights to visit. She can provide maps and directions to all points of interest, not just in Carthage, but the entire area. This is a real plus if you are not from the area. Be sure to take in Carthage. There are many things to see. We really enjoyed our weekend and will definitely be back. A little bit of trivia, "Who built the Boots Court"?". Also, check out the Boots Drive-In(you can only bank there now).

Room Tip: There are only five rooms at this time so be sure to call ahead.

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay! It would be great to see you on your anniversary every year! You will be pleased to know we are starting on the restoration of the rooms in the front building, including the OTHER Clark Gable room, #6. We hope to complete the next four rooms in the next six months or so. Come by sometime just to view the progress! We love showing it off!

Everything is charming and comfortable. Loved the floor furnace. Brings back fond childhood memories. However as WiFi isn't authentic...a tv would have been nice. My family had one in 1955. They came out in 1947. If you heave wifi, shampoo dispensers and air conditioners, you might as well throw in a TV. And a secondary door lock would be great. Other than that, nice place.

Thank you so much for staying at the Boots! I do apologize that we did not do a good job of explaining the amenities. You are correct that not all of the features in the room are period-appropriate - and we don't think our guests would really want them to be: 1940s mattresses were not that comfortable! Other items, like the GFCI outlet in the bathroom, the three-wire outlets in the room, the smoke detector on the ceiling, and the wireless thermostat controling the furnace are required by code, so we had to install them to get a Certificate of Occupancy from the city inspectors. Anyway, we also think our guests appreciate being able to plug their three-prong devices into the outlets and feel reasonably safe from fires thanks to the smoke detectors even though they are not appropriate to the 1940s. Which brings us to WiFi. We had a long debate about WiFi and ended up providing even though it was obviously not available in the 1940s. WiFi is invisible and so doesn't impact the historic appearance of the rooms; televisions are not invisible, and so putting them in the rooms, we felt, would insert a jarringly modern note into the furnishings. Same thing with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffee pots. The rooms actually DID have window air conditioners in the 1940s, but we installed quieter, more efficient air conditioners instead of reconditioning the ones that were in the windows when we bought the building. And the soap dispenser are place holders. Soap dispensers are period-appropriate, but the glass globe ones that we would like to have are so expensive (because they are antiques) that we couldn't afford them even if we could find enough of them to furnish all the rooms! So we opted for modern soap dispensers instead. I do apologize that you found these modern additions intrusive, but I hope you will stay with us again sometime in the future - even without the television!

The Boots Motel is an iconic historic motel on Route 66, at the junction of historic U.S. Route 66 and U.S. Route 71. It features two buildings, one built in 1939 and one in 1946, in the Streamlined Moderne style. Neglected for years, it is currently being restored to its 1949 appearance. Five rooms in the 1946 building are now completed and ready for occupancy. They feature spacious rooms with the original hardwood floors and built-in vanity dressing tables, and ceramic tile bathrooms with shower stalls They are individually decorated and furnished with period furnishings such as chenille bedspreads and 1940s-style furniture. Some still have the original round mirrors installed over the dressing tables. There are no televisions since television was not available in the Carthage area until the mid-1950s, but, as originally advertised, there is "a radio in every room," and the motel does offer free WiFi.
