Owner description: Mural depicting 45 famous Missourians.

They have done the history of the region in a series of HUGE murals along the flood wall downtown. The murals not only seem to project out from the wall, but you can see the shadows produced by the projections.

Ten foot high by twenty foot wide gates allow you access to walk along the river itself.

The city has put a lot of effort into refurbishing the area.

I was recently in downtown Cape Girardeau with guests for a meal at Port Cape (excellent restaurant in one of the oldest buildings in Cape). The restaurant sits on the riverfront and across from the floodwall murals. After dining, we got an ice cream cone to go (hand dipped!) and strolled along the murals. I think the murals are well done, and it was interesting to read the signs that go with each one. We also went on the other side of the wall to the river, where there are park benches and places to sit along the river. It was lovely to sit and watch the river boats and people who were out with their children and dogs for a walk. Everyone was friendly, with people visiting with one another, and it felt small town and like a step back in time, away from the busyness of life. The riverfront is all rock or stone, though, so not a grassy park like setting, but more just water and stone steps. There is current construction for more parking and a public restroom area, which will make the riverfront more tourist friendly. All in all, it's my favorite thing to do when we have guests in town, and I recommend it for a leisurely night time outing (especially if there is also music on the lawn of the courthouse) or as a good way to break up a trip on the interstate, with the opportunity to stretch your legs and have an ice cream cone.

It's been years since I lived and visited Cape. What a pleasant surprise to find an outdoor museum and history lesson, all-in-one! On my husband's first visit to the area, we spent a leisurely few minutes walking by the river and learning of all the greats that hail from the state of Missouri. I must admit, being from New York City, I'm always a skeptic when other folks talk about sight-seeing. This is a sight worth seeing, free of charge. It only takes a few minutes and you can bring 1 or 100 and everyone will have the same great experience. Young or old, you won't want to leave without enjoying this treasure. And don't forget to bring a camera!

This mural stretches for several blocks in old downtown Cape on the flood wall that was built several years ago to contain the Mississippi. If you go down to the edge of the river, you will drive or walk along this wall to get to the opening that lets you on to the levee. There are placards every 20 or 30 feet that tell you what is in front of you.

You will be surprised at some of the famous people who are Missourians, I promise.

While you're there, walk through the opening (which closes when it floods!) and down the levee to the water.

Downtown Cape is fun to poke around in.

This wall provides some great photo opportunities.
