“Good Experience would stay here again”
Reviewed July 22, 2010

My wife and I just came back from our 3 day trip to Branson. We had booked a standard queen room but because of over booking we were upgraded to a mini-suite. The front desk staff was very polite as they explained what had happened. I will say that the hotel's website doesn't do this place any justice as the website looks like it was launched in the late 90's. We got to our room and settled in everything was clean and appeared to be in good order. We also got a free cookie upon arrival which was actually very good. My wife was starving so we decided to go search the town for food (which stick with the chain restaurants in this town). We also took in the SIX show which we had purchased the tickets through the hotel. The show was very high energy and for a Branson show I was impressed as was my wife. The next day we got up and headed for the breakfast that is included with the room. This is not your ordinary hotel breakfast....fresh eggs, sausage, french toast it was excellent. As a matter of fact the next day we went and had breakfast downtown at a cafe and it wasn't as good as the hotel's breakfast. The property itself is very clean and the housekeeping staff was very friendly. All in all I will stay at The Grand Plaza Hotel again.

The front desk is VERY rude and condescending. We will NEVER sleep there again. We switched the hotel after 1 night and stayed at another hotel for the rest of the trip. Good thing we did. Otherwise our vacation could have been a total loss.

Bought Tickets (reserved room) on Reservebranson.com , so I already paid for my room. Then they "accidentally" charged my Mastercard again. tieing it up with Charges that were their mistake, now my credit card is tied up, waiting for banks to transfer it back in, Big Headache. Make sure when you check in and out, if you've bought your tickets from somewhere else, that they dont double charge you.

Also, when I called, you would have thought that they would have offered something for my troubles. But no. I just was told Sorry. And wait for your money.

There's plenty of Hotels in Branson, dont think I'll stay there again.

We live a little over an hour away, and come to Branson a few times a yr. We checked in with our kids, one age 20 the other age 16. The greeting at the front desk was business like but not friendly. We all felt instantly like we were being talked to like we were children, though I am in my late 40s and my husband in early 50s. The place smelled of cigarette smoke from our first step in the door. There is an open bowl of old apples at the desk, which one would have to be crazy to think of taking and eating.
I thought the smell was the conference room, perhaps, but I did not see any smokers, and no matter where we went in the building the smell was there. The staff, where ever we encountered them, were not friendly. I am used to a 3 star hotel where every staff person you encounter smiles back at you, and when you say hello, they say hello back to you, from the front desk persons to the gift shop to the housekeepers, etc. This crew all look past you, giving the continued impression that you are not really welcome. There are paper signs taped in the rooms, warning you not steal the towels, and telling you how much it would cost you if you do, and also another little sign telling you that if you smoked in the non smoking room (which already smelled like smoke) it could cost you up to $500. The fitness room is LOCKED, right next to the pool, with another sign that says you have to go to the front desk to get permission to use it. So, we did not go ask for permission, and did not get to use the room that is advertised as one of the amenities. Getting scolded and warned by little paper signs everywhere we went is rather insulting. The funniest part of that is 99% of the other guests are even older than we are, look like mostly in their late 60sor later! So, who are you continuously scolding with your little signs everywhere? Are there rogue seniors who come in and abuse the fitness room and steal hand towels?? LOL.
Then, after we had been out in Branson, had a late dinner, then a quick late night swim, we came back up to the room and the electricity went out!! Nothing! No air, no TV, no lights, no housekeeping or maintenance or security crew going around to check on the guests. I am SO glad we had not been on the elevator when the power went out!! We had been in the room for just a minute or two from the pool area when the power outage occurred. We called the front desk, and I understand she was suddenly overwhelmed, but she was unfriendly, and said "Ma'am, all of Branson is out! It's dark everywhere!" But looking out our window from the 8th floor, I could clearly see that was not true!! It was very difficult to try to manuever around the room using a cell phone for light, then to try to fall asleep...... once I did finally get to sleep, at 3 am everything came back on, so all of a sudden the lights and fan came to life, pulling me from a sleep I had just found! Then, was hard to go back to sleep again!
The breakfast buffet in the morning was very nice, though we were tired and grumpy from the weird night. The pool was perfect temperature, and we had it to ourselves, which is always relaxing when that happens. The hot tub was also nice. Upon returning home, I see an email alert from our bank that a $20 charge was processed from the hotel, 'for incidentals'. I understand the whole "hold" thing on your account when you book a room, etc., but we paid for this ahead of time, and although we are assured that the $20 charge will be credited back early in the week, it is still just like another one of their little paper signs telling you not to steal things.... it was not a total disaster, but we will not stay there again!

Thank you for your comments. I would like to apologize for the bad experience you had while staying with us in February. We're not normally very busy during that time and try to run as lean a staff as possible, as does all of Branson. The cigarette smoke you encountered was most likely from the smoking area located outside the front doors on either side of the building. Sometimes those doors are left open and the smell comes right in the lobby. As of March 1st we moved to a completely non-smoking hotel. We replaced all of the carpets in the rooms and deep cleaned every room, even the non-smoking ones, as we do every "off'-season". The front desk is responsible for making sure the guest knows where everything in the hotel is and what our policies are before you leave the front desk, so as to save us from repeating questions later on. So I apologize if they came across as treating you childlike.
The apples are put at the front desk for guests, as we've had many requests and compliments about those. They are thoroughly cleaned before they are ever put out for our guests to eat. Thank you for letting us know how unfriendly our staff was, it is our goal to make every guest feel welcome and when we are not meeting that goal, it needs to be taken care of.
The paper signs you encountered in the room are stickers that are put on the mirrors. We have had to do that recently because guests have walked out with our items or have smoked in the rooms, and it's very costly to replace items or get the smoking smell out of a room so it can be rented again. We do it simply to notify guests that it's important we keep our hotel in the best of shape for future guests and to hopefully prevent it from happening in the future. They are not meant to scold you in any way. We keep the fitness room locked so as to keep children out of there without adult supervision. Again, this has had to be done because of previous issues. It is our way of making sure that the people who want to use the workout room are able to.
As for the electricity going out, that was not under our control. It was definitely not a planned event and we do not have housekeeping staff or maintenance staff on evening shifts. We only have the front desk agents, so it is very hard for them to leave the front desk and make sure each guest is ok. Had you been on the elevator when the power went out there is an emergency phone in there and there is an emergency generator that allows them to work. The emergency generator also allows for emergency lighting in the hallways throughout the hotel. It just isn't powerful enough to light all the rooms as well. The $20 hold that was put on your card was simply that... a hold. It was never a charge, but an authorization and was released at midnight the day you checked out.
I'm am happy to hear that you enjoyed the pool, hot tub, and breakfast buffet and deeply apologize the rest of your stay did not go as planned. We hope that you will give the Grand Plaza Hotel another chance to show what a great hotel we really are. Again, I apologize for all of the issues you had during your stay.

We've stayed here for the past 4 years and each year it's gets worse.
Pros:
Yummy, free breakfast.
Location
Free wireless internet
Decent price

Cons:
Parking Lot-there is no covered drop off area and they could use more parking. Not good for people in wheelchairs, because of the steep hills.
Dirty laundry room, complete with dead and alive roaches. Lots of them!
Dirty carpets
Rooms just don't feel clean.
Pool had too much chlorine in it last time and you could barely breathe in there.

For our trip this Fall, we will be staying elsewhere.

Have never experienced a better pool -- size, cleanliness, and water temperature.
Ditto for the kindness and competence of all levels of staff.
The rooms, beds, accouterments, were all above average.
The free, banquet style breakfasts are a serious plus for individuals and families.
The beautifully appointed, spacious lobby and roomy indoor corridors are fabulous.
Restaurant/lounge with live, gentle music are very welcome.
Suites, family units, laundry, fitness room, banquet facilities ---- what more is there?
Ideal Location!!!!! Complimentary and ample PARKING!!!
All in all ---- who could ask for more!!
