We went out for Mother's Day to another restaurant (The Red House, Market Benhan) which was so awful we actually walked out. Needless to say at 3pm on Mothering Sunday we were rather doubtful of finding anywhere nice til we remembered the Red Lion Inn - we ate here a whiles ago and it was superb so we decided to throw ourselves on their mercy and they managed to fit us in with elegance. We were immediately seated and immediately struck by the wonderful warm ambience and the lovely hosts. Sensibly they had a set menu for such a busy day but it had a good range of choices. To start I had the most delicious cheese souffle, our son had Duck pate (which he declared he would have happily eaten for all three courses) and my husband had a fresh and well seasoned tomato and basil soup. We had roasts for our mains and both the port and the beef were perfectly cooked. The vegetables were gorgeous - again perfectly cooked and very tasty - cauliflower, broccoli, carrot and asparagus - a small quantity of each and separately prepared (all fresh!). And just when we thought it couldn't get better the was pudding - I had a lovely lemon tart, our son a chocolate pudding (but very light) and my husband had vanilla cheescake (it must have been good because I didn't get offered a bite as I usually would). At the end of the meal I realised that not one of us had left a scrap of food on any of the courses! I can not recommend this place highly enough and we already have plans to go back in spite of the fact it is a fair distance from where we live. Thank you so much Red Lion for rescuing Mother's Day!
