Review of Castlewood State Park

Castlewood State Park

Owner description: In the early 1900s, the area that’s now Castlewood State Park was a popular retreat for partying St. Louisans. The dance clubs are gone, but the winding Meramec River and the lush valley that surrounds it remain. The park has hiking and mountain biking trails that range from those great for first-time riders to ones that even the most experienced will return to time after time. The park is considered one of the best mountain biking locations in the St. Louis area. Good fishing, broad meadows filled with wildlife, and plenty of recreational facilities make the park a favorite for people who want an adventure or just to get away.

Very large built within civilization but somewhat hidden so a good place to, "get away", without going far.

“Beautiful, but needs better trail markers”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2013

Beautiful scenery, but really needs to have better trail markers --- We had our horses on the trails and were very confused about where to go that were equestrian trails. It was also difficult to see the signs for trailer parking

“Great trails”

Love the riverside trail and the longer wolf trail. Great views of meramec river and only a few sections will strain the average hiker

“lovely park”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2012

This is one of my favorite places to go. I often ride my mountain bike about 10-20 times of year in this park. It is the best place to ride, walk, run in the st Louis area. With the Meramec river on the trails and rock formations it is spectacular. Climbing to the bluffs the view is gorgeous.
There are connector trail going almost to Eureka Missouri. I would estimate about 10 miles of trails. This place is the most exciting area with many attractions of nature along the way. You just have to know how to make your way to all the different trails.

Nestled in suburbia, this park surrounds the Meramec River (access for kayaks and canoes). Lots of equestrian, hiking and cycling trails wind through the woods. Scenic bluffs. Picnic pavilions and open space. Beautiful any time of year.
