“Recommend the 4 poster bed package!”
Reviewed October 5, 2013

Our stay at the Hall Garth was amazing; the 4 poster bed was sumptuous in a very charming large room; the spa was small but had this facility to ourselves for most of the day; the hour massage was wonderful and the evening meal and breakfast were delicious. Well worth the money for this romantic package!

Room Tip: Room 3 was great...although not a great view from the windows the sumptuous 4 poster bed more than c...

Lovely overnight stay . Weather was great we sat in the gardens and had a very pleasant time before dinner. We were presented with a menu that was varied and interesting . The wine was reasonably priced and breakfast was vast with plenty of choice .

Just got back from a one night stay in room 21 of this hotel. The room was perfectly big enough for our family of four but was not in the hotel but sandwiched between the pub and the spa facilities.
On first inspection the room seemed dated but ok but then we started to notice that housekeeping hadn't been satisfactory. Cobwebs hanging from the dusty curtain poles, unclean door mat, suspicious stains up the walls and the tea and coffee making facilities had simply been added to and not checked as there were open sachets and empties in the tea stained jar!
My husband had enquiries about wifi on arrival and told it was free access throughout. Not the case! No Internet access in our stable block room!
Not a bad nights sleep and the bed was comfy but breakfast was disappointing. Attentive and well mannered staff but all of the above reviews regarding the overcooked breakfast are true! Very disappointing and why serve food on such a vast plate???!!!

Dear Swamp Donkey,

Thank you for posting your comments on our site. I note you stayed in Room 21 which is actually between our main admin office and the link to the spa and leisure facilities, the stables is located further along the building. I am very sorry for the shortfalls in both Housekeeping and breakfast. You will see from previous reviews that we have received a few negative comments regarding overcooked breakfast. Head Chef has taken this on board and has conducted further training with the relative staff. The Housekeeper has also spoken with her team, there is no excuse for cobwebs and empty sachets, remedial action has been taken.

Last November we did add an additional booster for the Wifi system and since then do not receive many adverse comments regarding no signal. The office located next to room 21 regularly uses Wifi, I am unsure if you logged this at Reception as occasionally they reboot the server.
It was pleasing to read that you have a good nights sleep in a comfy bed and that the staff were well mannered.
Kind regards

Picked this hotel for a family birthday gathering. Stayed just one night in three comfortable rooms all doubles, clean with everything needed. The spa was small and not very inviting so did not use although we had brought our swimwear. The bar in the main building (where our rooms were) was also small so we went across to the Stable bar e few steps away. This could do with updating and again not very inviting. Seemed to consist mainly of business people drinking and watching a tv in a conservatory style space. We didn't eat dinner in the restaurant as we were meeting other family members elsewhere. Breakfast next morning was at lovely table in bay window overlooking golf course. All had full cooked breakfast including smoked haddock which was tasty (and £2.50 supplement). Waiting staff and on reception were all polite and helpful. Glad we only booked one night as whole place was lacking in the style and atmosphere departments.

Room Tip: Only saw rooms in main block which were fine but some seemed to be scattered all over the place. No...

Dear Boho Essex
Thank you for taking the time to post your review. I am pleased you found the staff to be helpful and friendly.
I take on board your constructive comments. The hotel changed ownership on 11th September there are plans in place to renovate the Stables, car park, public areas, the spa and some bedrooms as well as upgarding the golf course.
I do hope you will feel able to return next year to experience the changes.
Kind regards

What a wonderful stay we had at Hall Garth Hotel and Spa, from our very warm welcome on Wednesday at reception, to the excellent room we had (room 6), very well dressed and with lovely quirky floors sloping added to the charm of the building. We made use if the spa facilities as this was a night away from the children, and a time for us to relax which is exactly what we did here, we booked a table for 7.30 at the wine glass restaurant and were greeted by lovely friendly staff, and were treated to a fantastic 3 course meal, had a great night afterwards in the bar on the site, and spent a lovely cosy night in our comfortable room, breakfast was great too, full marks to the Hall Garth Hotel, and all it's staff who made our anniversary break really special, we will be returning, next time with friends and golf clubs, 10 out of ten, can't wait to return!

Room Tip: No tips, but room six with its views over the golf course was lovely, I will be requesting this room...

Dear David E
Thank you for posting your review following your recent stay to celebrate your anniversary. I am delighted you enjoyed your stay in Room 6, as you mention it is quirky being housed in the 15th Century Manor House.
I will pass your feedback on to the team, it is pleasing to read your comments about the staff they do try hard to offer a friendly and welcoming service.
We look forward to your next visit..

My wife and I have recently returned from a long weekend break spent at the Hall Garth Hotel. It promised a lot but did not live up to expectation. Navigating to reception can be a problem as is finding disabled car parking. Signposting needs improving.
The young lady on reception was bright and cheerful and eager to help, assisting with luggage etc. Fortunately we were in the main build, had we been accommodated in the Stable block or other block we would not have stayed. The room was quirky with age, sloping floors, a window that you could not open for some air, décor was tired and the room needed a lot of TLC, and a lot of cleaning to get rid of the accumulated dust on the pictures, door frames etc.
The bar in the main building is not very welcoming, a bit like sitting under the stairs at home with no ambience or welcoming member of staff. Drink prices are not cheap, and there is no draught beer available unless you venture to the Stable block bar.
The restaurant offered both a table d'hôtel and a la carte menu, but these were not cheap. The set menu did not change during our visit. Service in the restaurant varied greatly from excellent to poor, possibly a training need. The food was overpriced and bland, we were surprised to see the same dishes on both the bar menu and the restaurant menu, at the same price.
Breakfast was an experience, the first morning we were greeted promptly and shown a table only to wait for 15 minutes to be approached again. Breakfast was served on oversized plates, our single rasher of well grilled, over crisp bacon, single sausage, slice of black pudding and over-cooked fried egg, swimming in grease looked forlorn, day 2 was much better the food was not overcooked and the food was served on smaller plates, but on day 3 we were back where we started, overcooked food, large plates and the hotel was nearly empty.
Feedback was left for the management, unfortunately we were not filled with much confidence as we were advised that the person whose name appeared on this form had been left over 2 years. The management team were noticeable by their absence throughout our stay.

Room Tip: Hope for good weather, not all under one roof.

Dear PamFiley,

Thank you for posting your recent review on our site. I believe when trying to marry up our review cards that our Operations Manager Clare Robson has already emailed you directly.
For some reason a few old cards have popped up over the last few days, I can assure you my name is on the cards that are in general circulation, I have asked Housekeeping to discard and strays immediately.

Please accept my apologies for the Hotel not meeting your expectations. The hotel recently changed ownership on 11th September 2013, plans are in place to update and refurbish priority areas and improve the approach to the hotel and re surface the carparks.

We do have 4 disabled bays on site, one very close to the main entrance I am sorry you had a problem finding one. I am pleased you received a friendly welcome and assistance with your luggage on arrival. As you mention you were allocated a twin room in the main house, the reservation via booking.com on a Room Only basis, did not highlight a disabled requirement just a twin room. We have 10 rooms in the main house are full of character, the house dates back to 15th Century.

The Hall Bar in the main house is very much a dispence bar to service all the lounge areas and the restaurant, although draught beer is not available on this bar due the cellar restrictions, the staff are trained to offer this and deliver from the other bars. I am sorry if this did not happen. Our 3 course table d'hote menu is £20 per person which I do feel is good value for money, in addition the a la carte menu is available with main courses available
from £12. We also offer a reduced menu in the Stables Bar where the same dishes are charged at the same price.

I was concerned to read your comments about breakfast, I know you upgraded to bed and breakfast on check in. I have discussed the shortfalls with both the Head Chef and Restaurant Manager. What you received falls below our standards and additional training with the staff has been arranged. I am sorry you did not mention your disappointment in the Restaurant to Walid, Restaurant Manager at the time, giving him the opportunity to resolve for you.

I do hope my responses reassure you that remedial action has been taken where necessary.
We do value guest feedback and strive to improve the service and facilities we offer..
Kind regards

Booked this with the girls for an overnight spa day. Can only describe the hotel as quirky. Everythink all over the place in different annexes. Our rooms were not in same building. Our room was across courtyard up some extremely steep outside concrete stairs that was not lit on a night, so was dangerous. Thankfully the weather was mild, otherwise to get to main body of the hotel where the restaurant was located would have been a nightmare in terrential rain. Bathroom clean, but extremely small. However food was excellent, and staff nice and friendly. Spa facilities small, with only 4 beds and 6 chairs. All in all had a nice one night break, but expected much more from this hotel. Expensive for drinks, so glad we only stayed one night. On positive side, a good quiet nights sleep as beds were comfortable.

Room Tip: Try to get one in main hotel where the facilities are.

Dear Sharon S
Thank you for taking the time to post your review on our site. We do take all guest feedback very seriously and strive to continue the service and facilities we offer.
You made the comment the hotel is 'Quirky'. The original house dates back to the 15th Century and houses 10 bedrooms which are feature rooms. We offer a total of 56 bedrooms, the majority in the main building and others in the courtyard and located in the grade listed Mill House where you stayed. This area is quite popular for groups like yourselves and families as these are larger rooms and suites. I am sorry the light was poor and will ask for this to be checked out.
I am pleased you enjoyed the food and that the staff were friendly and helpful.
The hotel has recently changed ownership and plans are in place for refurbishment of key areas.
Again, thank you for your feedback.

Kind regards
