Wow what a place, hidden in its location. Had the seafood platter for two. WOW it was out of this world and was more than enough for my wife and me.

The Gulf of Mexico Coast has many culinary venues to offer the visitors and residents of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas. Anything from TexMex to fresh Gulf seafood from Brownsville, Tx to Key West, Fl. is available to the Gulf Coast Traveler. Many times we are attracted to the white linen, rose adorned, candlelit table, upscale formal dining choices of the Gulf Coast, offered by some of the finest chefs in the country. On the other hand there exists a treasure trove of dining experiences you can only fine by tapping into the dining favorites of the locals. This is one of those choices. In an area inundated over the years by hurricanes, storms and other such close calls from Mother nature, these cafés, diners and restaurants have not only sprouted but often succeeded against all odds. By virtue of sweat equity, spirit and southron ethic of these restraunteers, we as consumers are fortunate to have a plethora of independent eating establishments. Some of these stand out among others. One such place is KG’S in Waveland, Mississippi.
I have been to KG’s on several occasions and make it a point to do so on almost every visit to the area. Located near the intersection of Hwy 90, KG’s is a small Mom and Pop Shop across the street from Lowe’s Home Improvement Center on Hwy 603.
You may not find linen tablecloths or mahogany dining tables but you will find Marion and Ken. She waits on the tables and he cooks. The menu selection is surprisingly adequate and pleasantly affordable. You not only will find southern staples like hamburgers and fried seafood but you will see dishes like junk on a bun (a fav of my Father-in-law) which consists of sliced beef in gravy with your choice of cheese on a hoagie bun and is served in such quantity that a ravenous appetite is required. There is a shrimp salad that’s stacked high on a dinner plate with lettuce and greens topped with perfectly fried popcorn shrimp and complimented by a house dressing that makes this salad a retreat (emphasis on treat) from the usual fancy pants offerings of most main stream eateries. Again be prepared and don’t think this salad is an appetizer, it is an entire meal in itself and should be served with a togo box as standard fare.
You can get REAL sweet tea and soft drinks in the bottle to compliment your meal, and for those who don’t know what REAL sweet tea is, you’re missing out. The menu continues with difficult, because -they’re –delicious, choices and the volume alone insists you return to sample it in its entirety.
Don’t miss the opportunity to patronize KG’s even if Waqveland/Bay St. Louis is a bit out of your way.
You won’t be disappointed. Put a quarter in the jukebox and have a sweet tea for me.
