The first room the Hotel gave me was very appealing... The door to the room was open and the bathroom tub was rusted with big chips knocked out of it. Of course I got a different room, which was not much better... This hotel is in a great location in Downtown area, but needs a lot of money spent on it for RENOVATIONS!!! It is not worth the 109.00 a night...

Great location, but this place needs some major work. Checked in with wife and had a 10x12 room with two twin beds. Went down to the front desk and was quickly bumped to a king room (for $5 more). This room was on the back side of the building with no view. Shower leaked all over bathroom floor and eventually out to the carpet. Room smelled of mold coincidentally. No hair dryer. There had been drywall work on walls and ceiling that had not been repainted. Bedding from late 1970s.

Staff did what they could to accomodate, but they just need to blow that place up and start over. New hotels are popping up all over Starkville. Do yourself a favor and pick one of those.

This was a nice hotel in its day but it is desperate need of some updating. There was a musty old smell in our room. The hotel is right beside a bar that is open very late. It is the loudest hotel room that I have ever stayed in (including ones on bourbon in new orleans). The staff was nice and did what they could to help everyone.

We stayed here the night of the Egg Bowl. Nothing fancy but nice , good breakfast, and in downtown. the only downside was we were facing the street and so the noise was bad at night with all the college kids screaming. Overall - good experience!

This hotel is wonderful in so many ways. It had a great staff, good food, good rates and it is very homey. The charm of the place is undeniable.

On the good side, it's a great location in downtown Starkville, and the front desk clerks (apparently many of them college students) are usually very polite and gracious. As far as I could tell, the hotel is clean. While it is true that the hotel does not have its own parking lot, I found the city lot around the corner to be quite convenient and safe.

In the neutral zone, the cooked-to-order breakfast is somewhat spartan in size and selection. Also, rooms vary in size, and the ones facing the street seem to be quite noisy. Those facing the inner court offer no view but are quieter.

In the negative zone, my credit card was charged for an extra night despite assurances from a desk clerk that it would not be. I had to delay my arrival by one day due to an airline delay, and I called that afternoon to tell them I would be a day late. Because they had a waiting list for rooms that night, the clerk assured me I would not be charged as a "no show." But the charge did later appear on my credit card. After two weeks and several calls to the hotel, during which I was sometimes assured I would be called back within 24 hours with a resolution, I finally got a clerk to let me speak to the manager, who did initiate a credit to my card. This was way too much trouble for something that should have been quite simple to handle.

Stayed at the Chester the first weekend in April because no other hotels in town had two nights available for a reasonable price--the Chester was the best deal in town. However, my room was TINY, barely bigger than the bed I slept in, with the sink just feet from the foot of the bed and the shower and toilet wedged into a room just big enough for both. The room did not face the street, but faced a big brick wall and roof vents, and I heard the gutters all night when it rained. A colleague stayed in a larger room facing the street (oddly, for the same price!), but heard traffic all night, and the windows rattled when a large vehicle drove by.

The hotel has a nice historic charm and a good location in the middle of town, but parking is a little problematic at times depending on downtown traffic. I liked the security (swiping the card to get into the elevator or into the lobby after-hours). The morning complimentary hot breakfast was pretty good. The co-located bar and restaurant also seemed to be pretty good. Front-desk service seemed to get quickly overwhelmed, and I was unable to access either wired or wireless internet despite promises.

All in all, if location, security, and ambiance are important, this is a decent place to stay. If you are used to certain things from established chain hotels, this may not be for you.
