Called in the other night and wow! Completely refreshed, looked great, but wait there's more, the food was just brilliant and the service was fantastic. Our host Ray was the best, congratulations on taking Saltbush to the next level, just Brilliant! We'll be back.

“If there was a 3.5 rating, I would have given the extra .5”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2012

The Saltbush Bistro is an inconspicuous, casual bistro on the Esplanade at Aldinga Beach, some kilometres from other shops and restaurants in the area, making it a convenient place to dine when holidaying in the area.
There is an option for inside and outside dining; the few outside tables have a lovely view of the ocean and inside the tables are well spaced and the decor pleasant. A large wood oven pizza kiln in one corner of the main dining room is a feature and in a second dining area, windows provide more views of the ocean although it's a little way away. You can still see the beautiful sunsets in the area.
I'll start with the positives. The food was tasty and generous. My husband ordered a wood oven thin-based pepperoni pizza (with olives, mushrooms, chilli & anchovies) and he said it was the best pizza he'd had in some time. As it was 'Thursday night steak night' I ordered a porterhouse steak with asparagus and hollandaise sauce, served with wedges and a side garden salad. The steak was tender and cooked perfectly medium-rare, the hollandaise was fresh and the asparagus cooked perfectly. Wedges were tasty and generous, and the side salad was fresh with just the right amount of vinaigrette. A large serving of "garlic bread" (really a small pizza with garlic butter) was included in the $30 price too, although I declined it.
The wine list was minimal but included some nice selections from the local McLaren Vale wine district and I selected a Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon which was very smooth.
Now the negatives. Although the waitress was very friendly and prompt upon arrival, once she had taken our order, she only revisited our table once more after our meal was finished. This might have been fine except our meals took 50 minutes to arrive, and we'd long before finished our drinks. When she returned, she asked if we had enjoyed our meals but didn't ask if we would like another drink (or anything else for that matter... coffee? dessert?). Perhaps she was keen to get everyone out of the restaurant so that she could go home? Either way, both the wait for food and lack of service attention during the meal could have put us off the venue if the food hadn't been so nice.
The other negative, was that a nearby table of (very loud and obnoxious) local drunks who had finished their meals just before us, decided to quibble over their bill. We stood behind them at the pay counter for about 7 minutes before I asked the flustered waitress to serve us while they sorted it out. In the meantime, the said drunks loudly voiced all of their dislikes about the restaurant (and for that matter about every other restaurant in the area) to the (very gracious) young woman who owned it. They did concede after this barrage, however, that the food was very nice!
Anyway, we would definitely return and hopefully management will iron out the few hiccups with the service, as the food was well worth it. I would also sit on the balcony outside.

“expensive with small serves”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2012 via mobile

We are locals to the area and decided to try the salt bush as we had not been here before. The food was tasty but overpriced and serves were far too small. My 4yr old daughter finished her children's meal and was still hungry.... and she's not a big eater. Bit disappointing really. Wouldn't return to the salt bush considering all the amazing restaurants in the local area.

“One of the best around”

We have been to this excellent little bistro many times and it never fails to impress. I have never had anything there that was not super fresh and cooked to perfection. The staff are relaxed and friendly. I just love it.

“A good restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2012

We went with a group of about 30 for a celebration dinner and enjoyed our evening at Saltbush. There were menus on each table which had been printed specially (by the bistro) for the occasion. Most of us were seated at round tables which was appreciated as it’s so much easier to converse than at a large rectangular table.

We were offered a selection of main courses which were of generous proportions and cooked well. There were share plates of salad, vegetables and chips on each table. I didn’t have any salad, but can say the vegetables were cooked perfectly (not under or overcooked).

There is a kids menu and takeaway and pizzas are available. The children were given colouring pencils and paper to keep them occupied while they waited for their meals. There are tables outdoors if you want to sit and view the ocean across the road. We were quite impressed with the bistro and would definitely go there again. Staff were very friendly and efficient.
