JD's is a welcome addition to the City of PIcayune and offers the potential to provide an up-scale dinner service, in an otherwise mostly-empty culinary landscape.
Regrettably, it is located in a storefront, at what could be considered the backside of a small stripmall. The location is not visible from the main road, or the Interstate which it faces. Customers must rely on "tripping" over the restaurant, while visiting other establishments at this mall, advertising, or word of mouth. The eatery itself is non-descript, with dark walls, hard floors, some paintings on the walls and lower-end restaurant-type square table seating. There are no booths, or banqets, and a very high ceiling. The overall impression is the establishment lacks the intimacy and refined quiet expected in such a venue.
The strong suits here are the quality and preparation of the food. While having visited here several times, there have been few misses. The classicly trained chef is the son of the owner and they are delivering on their missions of creative compositions and hospitality. Note: On some weekend evenings, there is music.
My last visit was dissapointing, not for the overall quality of the food, but the amount and cost. My guest and I each a salmon entree', served on a bed of marinated lettuce. Other than two small triangles of herbed bruscetta, (without oil or butter,) the only other addition to the meal was a gin-and-tonic call-drink from the bar, and the tonic was flat. The bill for the "meal" exceeded $52, with the tip.
The owner and his son have put a lot of effort in this enterprise and they deserve to be successful. Having had the last meal at the height of the dinner hour, entering an empty restaurant and being joined by only one other couple in our time there, there is cause for concern.
This is a good, local place to go to celebrate an event with a professionally meal. While JD's is still getting its footing, it is one of the better restaurants in the area. Pricing and quantity are areas they need to address.
