“Three very good dinners in January 2014”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2014

I've been to this restaurant 3 times and had a great experience each time. I have yet to try something on their menu that I don't like. The prices are lower than upscale restaurants on the square and around Oxford. Maybe the comments about high prices are really about the portions. The portions are exactly what you'd expect for a sushi restaurant but they might appear small if you are accustomed to dining at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

“I don't think you can call this sushi or anything related.”

Really awful. The rolls I had appeared to be filled with bits of chopped pulverized raw fish. And it was during their opening period, so I can only expect it will go downhill from there.

“A Surprising Oxford Sushi Experience.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2013

Surprisingly good sushi experience at Jinsei in Oxford. The couple we were with - as is frequently the case - establish a relationship with a chef and then just say, "Bring us what's good," usually resulting is several off-menu dishes. (This worked wonderfully at Peche in New Orleans last summer.) This time the courses started with thinly sliced yellow tuna with cilantro, a small amount of hot pepper and a nice sauce, then moved from one even better dish to another. Pricier than just ordering off the menu, but well worth it (Also a good deal of our bill was for cocktails which were average at best - not nearly as sophisticated or nuanced as the sushi. So, skip the cocktails and focus on the creative sushi.)

“except for uchi austin, as good as it gets”

It's a beautiful space, and much like Snack Bar, you never ever would remember you were in a strip mall until you exited. We dined in the lounge, which seemed even more inviting than the main dining area, nice effective lighting, beautiful bar area, VERY comfortable. Service was exceptional, friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable, personable. And then there's the food and drink: first, let me say that their saketini is one of the best drinks I have ever had, a mixture of sake, vodka, and crushed cucumber. Someone else has posted that the tempura green beans are addictive; they could very well be. We will know more this next weekend when we are back in town: if we find an excuse to stop by Jinsei, even just for some green beans, we will have our answer. We also had the Tuna Kadoma, incredible tuna atop a rice cake with avocado, jalapeno, and an eel sauce (please do not freak out over this, it is just an ideal soy sauce based bit of juice to finish the preparation)...this is an amazing dish. Also had tuna with goat cheese crumbles and crispy green apples and a wolfe roll, which was ONLY delicious, as compared to out of this world. As for the concerns over expense, we had 2 saketinis apiece, 2 tuna dishes, 1 roll, and 1 appetizer and the total bill was $78. This is a wonderful addition to the Oxford dining scene; we loved every single thing about it.

“Nice atmosphere, good food, quite expensive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2013

This is a new restaurant, open only a couple of months. The John Currence restaurant Snack Bar (and also BBB) is right across the parking lot, so this may be a good option if you can't get into SB.

Two of us had a California roll, three pieces of nigiri, a bowl of ceviche, and a glass of white wine, and the tab, not including tip, was over $40. I have dined at sushi restaurants all over the US and Europe and by comparison found these prices quite high.

Having said that, this is a pleasant, modern restaurant. The wait staff is friendly, if a little inexperienced and awkward at times.

The food is delicious, and the sushi is fresh.

We will go back, but probably just for a drink and appetizer.
