“Home Base for a Great Weekend”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

My wife and I spent a weekend in Greenwood, including "The Help" driving tour, a visit to Robert Johnson's grave, and the Viking Cooking School. We stayed at the Alluvian. It is a very nicely redone old hotel. The price is really not top dollar, and the overall stay is quite good. We thought the included breakfast buffet was very good, and the room and terrace were an excellent setting. Our room was super, and the staff was great. We have no complaints and lots of good memories. If you are expecting 5 stars, go to the Four Seasons somewhere. If you are going to Greenwood, stay at the Alluvian.

We've stayed at this fantastic hotel several times before but I enjoy it more every time we're there. This time was for some Debutante activities for my daughters. The hotel staff does a great job with any help you need.

Our room was very comfortable, large with good beds and nice linens. The bathroom was large and pretty. Breakfast was on the level of a cheap chain motel with gravy and biscuits thrown in for local color. The reconstituted barely warm scrambled eggs were not worth eating but the big black, curly hair I found in the first bite of eggs made them completely repulsive. The coffee was cold.

I stayed at the Alluvian two years ago and the breakfast now is a poor imitation of what they used to have. I presume they are banking on people not actually noticing what they are eating.

The room had a very comfy bed with actual feather pillows. The bathroom was large and had a great walk in shower. All the staff that we came in contact with were very friendly. However, we were only there one night so were not able to experience all the hotel offered. Overall a very pleasant hotel.

Absolutely wonderful place to stay while visiting the Greenwood, MS area.... Attend The Viking Cooking School across the street - solo much fun... Love the Alluvian experience - great staff, awesome rooms..... Try to get a room facing Howard Street.... Courtyard is wonderful at night -- 4th floor terrace over Howard Street is fun to relax on with a glass of wine!!!! Must stay!!!

I rated this hotel average because the above average lobby and courtyard combined with the below average room decor and cleanliness make an "average" hotel for the money. My friend and I chose The Alluvian as a weekend spa and dining getaway, and from the awards and other reviews of the hotel, we expected an A+ experience. We wished we would have had realistic expectations, so my review is to give you just that; realistic expectations. Overall, the experience was good until we got to our room. Friendly staff, wonderful spa across the street, an excellent lunch at Delta Bistro, and a limited amount of shopping at a couple of nearby shops started our day out on a very positive note. Although not stunning, the lobby was fresh and the courtyard, which was our favorite part of this hotel, was very charming. When we stepped into our $200 room, we were brought down to another level. What we found was outdated and tacky decor, and a dirty, dirty, dirty room. Not a room that was not cleaned that day...a room that hash't been properly cleaned and maintained in probably a year or longer. We stripped the old comforter and shams, and had the staff bring us fresh white blankets to layer instead. Even though we had the air on 70 degrees that night and fell asleep comfortably, we are sure we woke up in the middle of the night sweating and steamy hot due to an override in the air conditioning system. The next day we ate breakfast on the outdoor terrace, which was delightful. I have taken photos of both the good and the bad so that you can make your own judgement. To sum this review up, if you would like a decent place to sleep so that you can enjoy the Viking Cooking School, the Alluvian Spa, and a FANTASTIC meal at Giardinas, the convenience of this place is worth the money. I'd also suggest just staying one night. You can cover everything to do in the town in 24-36 hours. However, if you are traveling primarily for a hotel experience, this is not the place for you. Trust me. Have realistic expectations.

Room Tip: Make sure and ask for a view of the street and not another building. The best rooms overlook the cou...
