“Had never been to a hibachi before”
Reviewed February 15, 2013

but I was highly entertained. Two locations in Columbus and Starkville and both feature the same menu. The food is good. All hibachi entres come with fried rice and it is excellent. I have had the steak, shrimp, chicken, lobster and scallops on my visits. They have been good and just okay. It depends on the experience of the hibachi chef as to the quality. Some of my family rave about the variety of sushi and sashimi but I have yet to try it. The prices can run a little on the high side. A family of four can expect to spend about a hundred dollars with appetizers, drinks and entres. You have a choice of private table or sitting with a group at the hibachi. My only complaint was the "fake" wasabi. It was actually horseradish with green food coloring. Overall it is a fun dining experience I recommend.

“Bright spot in a cloudy area...”
Reviewed December 15, 2012

After a string of disappointments, Umi turned into a pleasent surprize.
Had the hibatchi during lunch which was moderately crowded but not unpleasently so.
Service was quick and courteous.
Food was typical of a decent Japanese steakhouse. Good in other words.
Lunch came with salad, soup, vegi's, and fried rice plus the main meat.
Bill for family of four came to $56 and change for a steak lunch, two chicken lunches, a kid's steak, drinks all around, plus tax.
Evening dinners (after 2:30 p.m. I think.) cost about double.

There is a plus for active duty military at Columbus Air Force Base. Every third Saturday, 50% off bill (There was a sign on the door that mentions this.)

“Umi is good restaurant in a town of few restaurants”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

Kids meals of hibachi steak and shrimp were enjoyed and they took home the leftovers. The Mississippi roll was good, but the circumference of the roll was too large, do the pieces were too large to enjoy in the necessary
one bite. The shaggy dog roll was much more enjoyable as the circumference was perfect. The bill totaled $70.00, including tip, but no alcohol, for 2 adults and 2 kids so the amount could add up quickly with drinks and extras, so just be aware.

“Typical, good hibachi/tempanyaki!”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

The atmosphere was very nice and clean, and less cheesy than many hibatchi/tempanyaki restaurants. The selection of fun sushi rolls was cute. Lots to choose from for the beginner sushi eater. For more experienced sushi eaters, you'll notice a lack of subtlty in both texture and flavor, but that's to be expected in a small town in the deep south. Frankly, I was thrilled to have a non-fried food restaurant option!

The experience was also fun. The hibatchi cook seemed to really enjoy his job, despite having to be "fun" over and over again for each new table. The sake was mediocre, but again, we were glad we could find sake anywhere in the deep south. Drink enough of it and it starts to taste great!

We would go back, except for the fact that I cannot control myself around fried rice. Definiely would recommend to friends. Friendly staff and good food!
