“Beautiful spot!”
Reviewed December 30, 2009

Fantastic place to stay. We hiked the nearby trails, took a boat ride out with Pete - visited the mussel farms and nearby summer homes. The rooms are sweet - fantastic view. Trevor keeps a nice stock of wines and gourmet frozen meals in case you don't want to go out. We had Christmas lunch at Portage which Trevor arranged for us. I love the small family owned spots; they are so much more comfortable and personal than corporate hotels.

Arrived by water taxi from Picton, were Trevor was waiting to transport us the 5 minutes to the lodge. My first impression was, what a fantastic view. Our beautifully appointed apartment overlooked the water. Lot's of room for 2 females with the usual heap of luggage, very clean and fully self contained if you what to cater for yourself. If you want peace and beautiful surrounding this is the place. Stayed for 2 nights and on second day walked to Portage resort for lunch on the Queen Charlotte Walk and got the Postman's van home all arranged expertly by Trevor. I would recommend this lodge highly and Trevor had everything arranged just as had asked.

Easily describable as The Jewel of the Sounds, Te Mahia is nestled in a bay of golden sand and emerald bush which catches the last rays of the setting sun. By day, the multicoloured waters gently lap at the beach below your balcony and by night the silvery light of the moon and stars are reflected on the darkened sea to lull you gently to sleep.

The occasional morepork crysout in the darkness and the dawn breaks with a chorus of birdsong, the liquid notes of bellbirds mingling with tuis and other native birds. After living in a busy city, this is bliss!

I was greeted on arrival with warmth and friendliness and no effort was spared to make me feel welcome. Jan and Trevor are not only great hosts, they're also wonderful people who are genuinely interested in others.

The accommodation was really comfortable and uniquely personalised by Jan, who I understand does a lot of the design and furnishings. What a talent!

The only problem was that my stay was too short!

I can recommend Te Mahia to everyone!

People are right. The waterfront apartments are excellent - modern, spacious and well equipped.

However, the attitude of the owners needs dramatic improvement.

We walked in along the Queen Charlotte track in October. We had booked Te Mahia Bay Resort on the basis that it did not have a restaurant, but did have a cafe and a well equipped shop and provided ":gourmet frozen meals".

On arrival, we discovered a manager in residence, no "gourmet frozen meals" at all, the cafe not functioning - the manager couldn't operate the coffee machine - and the shop virtually bare of stock.

For lunch, the best we could do was a can of soup and a packet of chips. For dinner, we had more soup and a can of spagetti on toast - hardly gourmet!

Trevor arrived home and seemed very surprised that we were annoyed that the advertised facilities were unavailable. He seemed even more surprised when we said he might have warned us of this, given he knew we were walking in and would obviously be unable to obtain food elsewhere . Very poor service from a supposed provider of quality accommodation.

Despite this, I emailed on Sunday to book my daughter into this accommodation in January. He replied on Monday that "We have a Waterfront Apartment .... To confirm, could you send a credit card number." Today, Tuesday, I rang back to provide the number only to find that he had let the apartment to someone else - not good enough Trevor. Lift your game!

When I was looking for a place to get married in the Marlborough sounds, I came across this place - and nothing else compared!

The scenery is beautiful, native bush surrounds the complex, and the sound of native birds adds to it.

There are 3 different types of accommodation there, and they're all beautifully decorated. They have everything you need, plus more - right down to fresh flowers on the table. :)

My husband and I have been back a few times since we got married (2003) and it just keeps getting better! The owners - Trevor and Jann, make you feel like family, not guests, from the moment you arrive. They are more than happy to help, if you want to explore the sounds, with the best advice.

As there is no restaurant, you need to bring your own food, but they have a small shop & cafe, with the essentials, including gourmet frozen foods, which are delicous, and as I found out from our last visit last month, they also now have wine & beer. - which was handy for someone like me who ran out! ;)
Plus there are barbeques scattered around as well.

There are kayaks & dingys you can hire to go and explore, plus fishing lines too. My husband caught a fish off the wharf that we had for dinner. :)

The best way to get there is take a water taxi from Picton, it's a 20 min trip.

It's a very hard place to leave as it's so beautiful, peaceful & relaxing and I can't wait to go back!
