Maybe I'm spoiled; I've driven this road a bazillion times. I've lived in La Crosse most of my life.

Gorgeous drive. I highly recommend traveling the Great River Road Scenic By-way from the Twin Cities to the Quad Cities. One of the most beautiful sections of road in the country.

This route is beautiful year 'round.
Spring: Mississippi Flyway - best time to check out the bird migration heading north.
Summer: The sailboats on Lake Pepin - check out Hok-Si-La Park on the waterfront.
Late Winter: Bald eagles - too awesome for words!

I have to agree if your talking about winona and hwy 61, it does not compare to the best highways in the US, however you start from duluth and are driving the north shore drive part of 61, then your talking something really special. Indeed, Ive actually read where its the 2nd most beautiful highway in the world, (not just US), the first being in Germany. The highway has everything scenery galore, ive had black bears running across the highway, baby bears in tow. Timberwolves, deer. Then you have gooseberry falls, right there on the damn highway, then a beautiful lighthouse, again right on the highway. And all the time you watch the shores of Lake Superior, and you can rent a cabin and be just feet off the biggest freshwater lake in america. Then you have all the small little towns that dot the highway as you drive north to Canada, all with great hospitality and great little restaurants all with that small town feel, but with that unique lake superior lifeline that all the towns survive with.

You truly want one of your best drives ever, drive from Duluth north on the north shore drive of 61, all the way to thunder bay canada, and make sure and stay at one of the cabins overnight listening to the waves break against the rocks of lake superior. And yes i mean waves, this is no regular lake, you dont get small lake waves here, much closer to the east coast waves along the us. Some days smaller of course but some days larger.

In all, its earned its rep as one of the best in the world let alone best in the us.

I can't agree with the comment that it's one of the most beautiful drives in America, I can think of a dozen better very quickly. However for the area it's nice.
