“Fresh crab caught in the bay”
Reviewed September 9, 2013 for a stay in September 2013

Great hideaway on the SW tip of Islay. Away from the crowds and a landlady to die for. Watched crab being caught and were presented with some enormous crab claws to eat.
We'll definitely be back.

“Perfect location for family holiday”

Spent a lovely week on Islay staying in this wee gem of a cottage. Cottage was just perfect for a family holiday, spotlessly clean, well equipped and furnished, and with fantastic view looking out onto the bay in Portnahaven and it's colony of seals. Great also to have real coal fire if needed on a chilly evening. Very welcoming and friendly owner who provided lots of thoughtful extras, such as beach toys for my son and lovely homemade jam. First time on Islay and can see us returning, amazing scenery and wildlife, friendly folk, fantastic whisky, a great place to have a relaxing family holiday.

“Blissful, idyllic and stunningly beautiful”

I came to Portnahaven for the first time in 2010 on a Motorcycle trip to Islay which is when I discovered the beautiful bay unfolding from around the bend in the road as I approached. It's 18 miles away from Bowmore (I think) at the end of the road which is a stunning drive in itself.
I said to myself at that time that I would return here with the family to experience the beauty and seclusion of the place for a while, which is what we did in April.

The Bay - that's the cottage we stayed in, is on the left of the bay of Portnahaven about two thirds of the way along a very narrow access road atop the seal adorned rocks - you've never seen so many seals right outside your front window when you open the curtains in the morning.
It is a terraced cottage which doesn't pretend to be a five star holiday rental. Instead it retains all the charm of its surroundings in being more like a villagers home. Clean, comfortable and simply but adequately furnished with fresh decor and comfortable beds for a family of 4. There's also a sofa bed in the living room.
There is an open coal fire complimenting the electric storage heating keeping you warm around the year. The coal, when I was there, was free subject to a fair use policy and we had an open fire every night we stayed. The fire, coupled with an Islay malt and the utterly amazing sunsets we had, well, you get the picture I hope.

The kids had a great time having a little more freedom that they are used to living in the city. Climbing on the rocks and exploring the rock pools and the beach and the morning trip to the local shop for newspapers to light the fire with.
Take a trip to the pub across the bay and the locals will tell you where to call in to get home baked scones, home baking and freshly caught seafood as well as joining you for a chat and a wee dram. You'll be made most welcome.

The week I spent at the bay was genuinely the best break I've had in recent memory. Islay has a habit of slowly creeping up on you and stealing away your heart.
You'll want to come back. I booked another week before I'd even left.
The bay is very reasonably priced too. I can't think of a more cost effective way of recharging your soul or your faith in the human race than this.

Book the Bay, You will love it. Just don't book it on the weeks that I want it.

Slainte mhath!

“Amazing views, wildlife and hospitality”

We stayed with our two young children in April this year and it was fantastic. Just as we arrived the seals were in the Bay, literally a stone's throw from the house, and the fire was roaring away in the cosy living room. We had an amazing time with the kids on the lovely beaches and enjoying the local hospitality and the sunsets. Would thoroughly recommend a stay; we'll be back.
