Our stay at "Kelly's" got off to a bad start. A full rubbish bin had been left sitting in the sun at the front door - maybe for days. When we entered the cottage for the first time, the stench filled the rooms. It was a sickening stink. We opened our back door to find another bin from the adjacent unit in the same condition.
It seems that the owner does not live on Bruny Is. Contact details on their website are for 93a New Town Rd., New Town, which is a suburb of Hobart. The actual address of the Beachside cottages is 31-33 Nebraska Rd. Dennes Pt, Bruny Island.
Management seems to be very 'hands off'. There was no evidence of the initiative it takes to run a good place well.
Examples: the service directory instructs guests to empty their rubbish bins in large metal drums at the back of the property and to clean up the BBQ after use. But both these items had just been left to rot. As we attended to those filthy jobs we found there were no new bin liners.
Two towel rails in the bathroom were screwed to the wall and the screws had worked loose. They fell off during our stay. The basin faucet was also working loose;
We couldn't get TV reception. We rang the contact number and were told to ring Margaret instead, who told us she was "2 hours away". A 20 min. phone conversation with her elicited no solution. She gave us access to the adjoining cottage in order to exchange one set top box for another, saying they were exactly the same - but they were different. Interestingly, the adjoining cottage's TV had no reception either. We gave up.
We started to expect more irritating hitches and sure enough, the guest service directory had inadequate instructions to get the oven started.
Next day I used the powder provided in the small plastic bottle for the front-loading washing machine. That turned into a bit of drama with suds everywhere because it was the wrong powder.
But it could easily be so much better! Kelly's has a lot going for it. Even though you can't see good views from the property, Kelly's location is excellent. - just across the road from the beach (although you couldn't supervise small children on the beach from your deck as another website claims). The very good cafe/restaurant on Dennes point is not far.
Kelly's feels fresh and new and contains attractive, good quality furniture & fittings. It was exceptionally clean inside. The mattresses were very comfortable, the synthetic blankets were light, very soft and cosy - best I've ever seen - and the bedlinen had even been commercially laundered. There were some unexpected extras too: a second fridge, and some useful basic cooking supplies, which was generous.
What's needed is a local resident with enough initiative to manage it properly and ensure everything is in order before paying guests arrive. Bruny Island has a permanent population so that is not a big ask.
People booking Kelly's would do well to pay the balance owing only after they have arrived and to insist that they are met at check-in. I did neither which was a mistake.
