Fee: Yes
Owner description: Shipwrecks from a mighty 1905 November gale prompted this rugged landmark's construction. Completed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1910, Split Rock Light Station soon became one of Minnesota's best known landmarks. Restored to its 1920s appearance, the light station offers a glimpse of lighthouse life in this remote and spectacular setting. Split Rock Lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark.

“Spend the Time to see Everything Here”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2012

This century old light house and grounds are a must see. For a small fee, you can stay all day and explore the light house, the light house keepers house, which is furnished with period furniture and actors dressed in period costumes to answer your questions. Then tour the fog signal building and other small buildings. Do yourself a favor and hike down the 171 steps to the rocky beach to get a breathtaking view of the light house and take a picture from there. From there you can see the ruins of the old tramway that used to bring supplies to the light house keepers and their families. The steps coming back up are staggered with resting stops, so don't feel bad if you need to stop to catch your breath- it is worth it!! And definitely take the time to see the half hour movie about the building of the light house. It is full of history, original film and pictures and is quite nicely acted out and produced- not cheesy- like some are. The whole experience is a must see for the whole family!!!

“another piece of history to see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2012

The drive from Duluth to Twin Harbors is a beautiful drive. I've never been to a lighthouse, so this was fun and interesting to see. They displays are educational, there are also places to hike and picnic. Even though it was cold, I was glad we went to this historical site. It is a little pricey at $9 per person but it is a state historical place and very well kept.

“very nice tour”

We were initially reluctant to spend the money for the tour, but it was well worth it. The guide was excellent and the lighthouse site was impressively well-maintained. What an engineering feat!

“Not for a bike trip.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2012

We were biking through and thought we'd stop and look. $18 for 2 of us and it's a half hour tour now. When did that start? I was just there in 1983.

“Worth the visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

The views were spectacular and the sense of history and disaster immenent! We arrived early and walked around before returning to the desk to buy the arm band. The kind of place that you explore down several paths and dont mind a reseanable cost.
