Owner description: Shipwrecks from a mighty 1905 November gale prompted this rugged landmark's construction. Completed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1910, Split Rock Light Station soon became one of Minnesota's best known landmarks. Restored to its 1920s appearance, the light station offers a glimpse of lighthouse life in this remote and spectacular setting. Split Rock Lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark.

This is a great place. The staff is friendly and we had a great time. The state park beach is worth the trip too.

“The reason for our trip”
Reviewed May 24, 2012

My friend got a little figurine of this place when he was a kid and finally decided to go visit it. It was worth the trip! Beautiful view and interesting information on the lake and wrecks. You can park and walk to the bottom of the cliff to get a view with no charge or you can pay $9 and get into the historic area, climb the stairs in the lighthouse, see the inner workings, view the information area and a restored lightkeeper's house. The famous pictures you see are taken from the bottom of the walk down by the shore. There are about 150-175 steps down (the walk back up was the hard part), but if you can do it, its worth the trip.

“A Must See if In the Area”
Reviewed May 18, 2012

I had heard of Split Rock Lighthouse for years and it was wonderful to finally see it. The setting is amazing as it dangles on a hillside over Lake Superior. It is very well kept up as they were mowing the grass when we were there.

“average.”

It is nice to go visit, but i wouldn't go there everytime I take a drive up north for the day. It's nice, well kept, but just something to do for a time filler. It has great views to it, and it is beautiful, but i wouldn't go thre every singly time I go up there.
