Owner description: Shipwrecks from a mighty 1905 November gale prompted this rugged landmark's construction. Completed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1910, Split Rock Light Station soon became one of Minnesota's best known landmarks. Restored to its 1920s appearance, the light station offers a glimpse of lighthouse life in this remote and spectacular setting. Split Rock Lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark.

“A Must See if In the Area”
Reviewed May 18, 2012

I had heard of Split Rock Lighthouse for years and it was wonderful to finally see it. The setting is amazing as it dangles on a hillside over Lake Superior. It is very well kept up as they were mowing the grass when we were there.

“average.”
Reviewed May 14, 2012

It is nice to go visit, but i wouldn't go there everytime I take a drive up north for the day. It's nice, well kept, but just something to do for a time filler. It has great views to it, and it is beautiful, but i wouldn't go thre every singly time I go up there.

“Lighthouse history is amazing”
Reviewed May 8, 2012

Split Rock is always an interesting place to visit due to the history behind it and the beauty around it. Totally amazing how it was built. Wish it was still lit every night.

“Iconic Minnesota”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

Anyone who's seen Split Rock lighthouse will always recognize it in pictures--it's got a truly iconic setting, high on a granite cliff overlooking the inland sea we call a lake (Superior). Although you have to pay to go into the lighthouse (because although it's a State Park, the lighthouse itself is part of the MN Historical Society), if you don't want to pay you can get great pictures from the picnic areas that you see the signs for when you drive in.

“Awe-inspiring”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

The Lighthouse, by itself, is a great addition to a Minnesota sight-seers list. It's a must see if you are in the area! The fact that it is built on top of a huge diabase rock cliff is one of the reasons why this lighthouse will have you grabbing for your camera. It is truly an awe-inspiring, unique sight to behold. I find it hard to just review the lighthouse and not mention the park surrounding it, so please see my review of the park if you like this one. The lighthouse is, it-self, not very tall and walking up to to the "top" is a must do if you visit while its open. You can gain some appreciation for the workers who had to carry supplies up the stairs. The other buildings on the grounds are also worth the time and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly! I recommend bringing a boat and seeing the light from the lake!
