The view is beautiful and the guide was very knowledgeable. Enjoyed it, we rode bike on the
Biking trail. Very hilly from gooseberry falls campground to split rock but worth it!

We visited Split Rock Lighthouse State Park in July and walked the trail down the stairs by the old rail system. It was quite a few stairs, and not for those physically challenged. The view was worth it though! Be prepared for a good aerobic workout!

This is my favorite lighthouse. Great place for everyone to visit. My hubby has health problems was able to go to the lighthouse level for pictures & sights. I got to go down the 100 or so steps to take pictures of the lighthouse from a distance. Visit the website to ensure you don't miss a thing. The fall colors were just beginning last weekend 10/03 so they should be simply gorgeous now. We so enjoyed visiting with the young lady portraying the lighthouse keeper's wife--she was simply the best guide ever!!! Climb the stairs up the lighthouse & have someone take pictures of your group coming down. The fresh baked cookies were perfect at the lighthouse keeper's house, also. The sky was so clear & blue making our pictures the best we've ever had. Expect to need something from this beautiful gift shop--we found a 3M cap.

We didn't have time for the tour, but the entrance fee (check their website) to the state park (did not include the cost of the lighthouse tour) was well worth it. It is probably not known by many visitors that the park opens before the lighthouse tours start, at least that was the case on the day we visited. I also don't know if it is always the case, but we were allowed to park in the lighthouse area and walk the grounds as long as we left that parking lot before the lighthouse tours started. When we were done enjoying seeing the lighthouse and grounds up-close without any crowds, we drove a short distance to a parking lot in the state park (near picnic area) to begin our walk to the shore for fantastic views of the lighthouse and rocky beach. In the morning of a bright summer day the temperature was cool and breezy, but warmed by the sun. Our 1 hour visit could not have been more perfect.

This is a hard review to write because we didn't have enough time to take advantage of the whole state park. We have a MN State Park permit so we don't have to pay to enter the parks, otherwise, it's like $5. A cheap day! We drove up to the lighthouse thinking we could just walk some of the trails or down the stairs to the lake to look up at the lighthouse. We didn't have time to take the tour, but just wanted to walk around. Headed into the gift shop which also has bathrooms and I asked the lady at the counter a little bit about trails to walk on and such. I didn't realize you had to pay just to walk around. And I wasn't thinking about the area near the buildings, that I could understand, but even the trail that starts in the parking lot was a fee area. So that was kind of a bummer. The clerk was neither friendly, nor rude. Our clerk in the gift shop however, was super nice.

We drove back a ways and found another road that took us to a picnic area and we parked there and walked on a "hiking club" trail and came out to rocky beach area and had a great view of the lighthouse and took our pictures there.

The rocks were fun to skip into the water and to throw them into the water. Very peaceful just looking out at the water and lighthouse.

Someday we'd like to head back and take the tour and be able to enjoy all it has to offer. We were only here about an hour and like I said, you definitely need more time because I think the park has a lot more to offer.
