“It was ok”
Reviewed September 15, 2011

My group to Canada stayed here last year and it was very nice. Stopped again this year and they may want to make improvements. First, when I went to make a resevation, it took about 20 minutes to reserve two rooms. The person taking my resevation must have been new, she seemed to have no idea. When we arrived, I was told the rooms were smoking. I was never told this when I booked the room. The hotel seemed empty, with few cars were in the lot. I do not understand why they would not give me a non-smoking room. The room was was clean and did not smell too bad. The restaurant was ok. The burgers were good, but not worth $11. All the staff was very nice. The bartender did a great job. We might consider staying here again. I think we got a good rate on the room.

We stayed two nights in a Superior Two Bedroom suite. This was our second time staying at Superior Shores. During our first stay, which was a year ago, we stayed in a budget friendly lodge room, and weren’t thrilled because the double beds were really small and uncomfortable. But we were impressed by the grounds, the outdoor pool, the woodsy room décor, and the location, so we decided to return and upgrade to a king size bed, and the full kitchen. We made a smart choice.

We went with family, so there were 4 adults and 3 kids. We choose to have king beds in both bedrooms. Two kids shared the pullout couch and one was on an air mattress. I was a little concerned that it would feel crowded, since the lodge rooms are so small, but we had lots of space. The whole suite was very clean. The king beds were really comfortable. Written on the side of the mattress was 2010, so they are fairly new. Bed linens and towels were soft. We requested more towels, and housekeeping brought them right away. My only complaints were that we had no room darkening curtains or blinds (just a thin curtain), so our room was light by 5:45 a.m., and the pullout couch’s mattress had a big sag in the middle.

The kitchen was fully stocked with all of the dishes and utensils we needed for preparing meals, plus dish soap, dishwasher detergent, paper towels, a dishcloth and towel. The grill on the deck worked well. The living/kitchen area provided ample seating for all of us while dining and relaxing.

One of the things we like best about this resort is the outdoor pool – most of the other hotels or resorts in the area don’t have one. It’s nice to take a swim after hiking the parks all day while still being able to enjoy the outdoors. The lakeshore is very scenic, and they added some much needed chairs on the beach since our visit last year.

When we searched for other hotels/resorts to stay in along the North Shore with similar cabin or room layouts, they were all at least $100 more per night (North Shore prices are high during the summer). Superior Shores provided everything we needed for a great value.

We were traveling with children who loved reck collecting on the beach as well as the various pools. We had standard rooms which were fine, comfortable beds and quiet.

We have stayed here 3 different times during Grandma's Marathon weekend. We have family members who participate in the race and this is a nice place to stay for the weekend if you want a quieter location than in Duluth. The acomodations were nice with a great view of the lake from the deck. On our last visit we lounged on the deck after the Marathon was over and watched preparations for an outdoor wedding on the grounds overlooking the lake. Very peaceful and relaxing. The room was nice to have room to spread out with living area, kitchenette/bedroom rather than a standard hotel room. Liked the 'up north decor'. Only disappointment was the pull-out couch was very uncomfortable. Not too desirable for the family member who just ran 26.2 miles. It definitely needs to be replaced. Stayed here about 4 years ago and was bad way back then, so long overdue for replacing. We did not have dinner in the restaurant on site during this trip but enjoyed on past visits. We did have the Sunday brunch, it was not as good as on past visits. Should have ordered off menu instead. Love the north shore and this is a great location.

Our room had dead bugs all over. Dirty carpet. My pillow had a blood stain. The whole place had flies everywhere. The staff was clueless. They quoted me one price, and charged another. The manager refused to correct the charge.

My husband and I have enjoyed Superior Shores at least annually for the past ten years. We've celebrated countless birthdays and anniversaries together here, and our most recent stay was to partake in my sister-in-law's wedding with about 100 family members and friends. What a spectacular weekend! I've always loved the location, the Superior suites, the "fish bar" lounge... now I can say I love their banquet facilities and staff as well. The day went off without a single complication. Food was excellent, beach ceremony was beautiful, staff was gracious and accommodating.
The cost for lodging can be a bit high, but in my opinion no other resorts with a similar price point in the area compare (and we have stayed at just about all of them).
This resort is just as amazing the rest of the year as it is during the summer months; in fact, our favorite time to visit is January-April. My 5-yo son would disagree; he loves the indoor and outdoor pools (mom loves the sauna and large hot tub).
Check the 'Packages' and 'Special Getaway Offers' links on superiorshores.com; there are often specials which include restaurant vouchers. We normally eat in the lounge; the bartenders are known to cater to our special requests (off the menu cheese plates...my favorite). The only luxury I've always wished they'd offer is room service, but we find no shame in shuffling to the restaurant in our jammies for to-go boxes. :)
Love this place!

Room Tip: Higher level rooms on far N or S ends of lodge (away from deck and banquet hall) are most enjoyable...
