This is a great place to stay. The owners are wonderful people from the area and can give you ideas about things to do and see while you are there. The have a nice continental breakfast every morning. The rooms are clean and nicely decorated. If your plan is to sit in the room and watch TV all day, there is no cable-- but so what-- I don't go on vacation to watch TV, I can do that at home! They do have a nice collection of games and DVDs if you find yourself at the hotel in the evening or on a rainy day. I loved the opportunity to stay in a train car! Great experience!

Oh-- and the fitness center is not "average"-- they don't have one, nor did I expect them to have one. I got carried away with my "excellents" and couldn't get rid of the rating! One can get all of the fitness they desire just by walking around town, hiking trails, etc. In that regard, maybe the "fitness center" is as good as you want it to be.

Room Tip: The rooms on the left side of the hallway, as you leave the reception area face the woods-- we could...

I'd highly recommend the Northern Rail Traincar Inn. The manager/owner is super friendly and takes very good care of you. They have a video collection for those rooms that have DVD players and a basic, yet enough of a selection of basic snacks and beverages for sale in the lobby area. We stayed in a King Conductor Suite and would highly recommend that for the extra room if traveling then more then just a couple. The place was very clean, well laid out, and the furniture inside the car was themed and all matched appropriately. We will be back later this year.

Room Tip: Get a full car suite if more then just two people, even if kids for the extra room- otherwise it'...

Our Girlfriends weekend at the Northern Rail Traincar Inn was great! The hostess, Cyndi, was very accommodating and helpful. A one-of-kind atmosphere, along with down-home hospitality, who could ask for more!

Room Tip: All rooms are beautifully done up. Some are a little larger, but all are nice.

Since it was a train car, I guess we thought it would be more interesting once inside, but it was like any other motel room. Which was a bit disappointing since the outside is so cool! The continental breakfast was nothing special. The owner was friendly. For the price of a nights stay, we wish we would have found a place on the water instead. It was clean and nice, just nothing that special considering the hype of it being a train. The location was convenient to all that we did in the area though. Loved Split Rock Lighthouse and Gooseberry Falls!

As others have stated, it is unique. We have stayed in both the Porter Rooms and the King Suite. This is an excellent place for get-a-way trip. The rooms are extremely clean and comfortable. Layouts do vary. They keep the doors open on non-occupied rooms so you can tour at any time. The owners are extremely nice and helpful. If you have young ones with you, then the pullout couches are ok but I would recommend this Inn as more of a couples destination. The King Suite was very large. At night when we returned to the Inn we typically spent all of our time however i the bedroom part of the room. Not what you are thinking... it is because the TV in the living room was only for watching movies and the TV in the bedroom had cable. So the living room was actually sort of wasted space for us. Bed was huge and comfortable. WI-Fi worked well and we were the farthest point. I agree that the breakfast is so-so and there is limited seating. If you are really hungry and want a hot breakfast, skip the continental and eat elsewhere.
Snowshoes were available to borrow, lots of books, games and movies. Curl up and relax or the location is so close to State Parks etc that you can adventure as well.
Would/Will return.

This place is amazingly unique. It is a perfect escape from the mindain hotel stay. The rooms were cozy and clean and well air conditioned.I stayed two night in two suites because I wanted to see different rooms. This place is close to bettys pies and split rock light house, goosebury falls and a short drive to the Duluth train station. I highly recommend this place .

The place is much more interesting from outside the rooms than inside, since once you are in your room, it’s tough to tell you are in an old freight car. The rooms are nice, though, large and clean. The hallways can be noisy. The continental breakfast was nothing special. The hosts were very friendly.
