“Beautiful Setting”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2013 via mobile

Hard to write a review.....the location is beautiful, the amenities are many, but seriously needs some work. We stayed in a Grand Superior Suite, which had a great view, but the room left me underwhelmed. Tiles around the tub were cracked, the swivel chairs were dated, the carpet stained....the heat registers could use a little TLC. (Ie. a coat of paint). Minor things I know, but when so many minor things are apparent, it becomes hard to overlook them.

We loved having a fireplace in our room, and I liked the fact that there was not daily room cleaning unless requested, so nobody to bother you.

The outdoor pool is small, but I imagine it would be great fun to use in the winter. The hot tub kind of grossed me out, there were cigarette buts put out around it when we went to use it.

We did not attend any of the activities, but there were plenty. A family with kids would love these, as would anyone who wants to do something. You would only have yourself to blame if you were bored here.

We ate both in the restaurant and the pizza cafe. The service we received in both was excellent (especially the cafe!) the food in the restaurant was fair, part of my husbands dinner had to be sent back because it was cold.

So, I have very mixed thoughts about Bluefin....there were so many little details that they overlooked, it seemed a shame to have such an awesome location and not pay close attention to detail. Next time we will stay in Grand Marais.

We stayed with another couple just after the 4th of July. Let me start by saying this place has a lot of amenities (kayaks, bikes, indoor/outdoor pools and s'mores kits etc.), but it could probably use a facelift and some tweaking. The housekeeper who cleaned the unit did an excellent job and left a ready-made fire in the fireplace. Conversely, the indoor pool area had 2-3 band aids laying near the hot tub along with multiple towels on the floor in the locker room. The locker room also had a bad smell and (along with the indoor pool area) seemed very dark and outdated. At least one staff member came in and emptied the trash while we were there and could have "policed" the area. The outdoor pool area also appeared outdated and in need of a facelift.

I'm not the most familiar with the area but my guess is that this is a good place for those wanting to pack little to nothing in terms of outdoors equipment. The scenery is great and you're within a short drive of many cool things, but I don't think the cost is compatible with the quality unless some improvements are made.

Room Tip: Kitchenette units with a fridge are very useful

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We sincerely apologize for your negative experience at our indoor pool. We do have designated staff who monitor and clean up each of our pool areas frequently throughout the day. We are increasing the inspections and management oversight of our pool areas to ensure that the locker rooms and pool decks are in proper condition all of the time. We certainly appreciate your business and look forward to serving you better in the future.

We try to stay at Bluefin Bay once a year as an anniversary celebration. We didn't make it up this year, so, our sons gave this stay, as a gift, at Christmas. As always, it was perfect. The room was beautifully done and up to date. You don't even have to go out. With the kitchen it right in the unit, and with a view like this... why would you go anywhere else. It is always nice to get dinner to go from the Coho right next door then eat in your unit with a view like no other. We had a fire every night, and falling to sleep with a fire going, and the waves crashing on the rocks... how perfect it that?

We have stayed at Bluefin many times over the years, and it has to be one of my favorite places. This last time, we rented a studio room last minute. I was a little apprehensive because the studio did not have a bed, instead it was fold out couch. However, it was actually very comfortable memory foam mattress! We enjoyed our stay. The room had a full kitchen, real wood burning fireplace, and a deck that was feet away from the Lake! It was also tastefully decorated and we would definitely stay in the studio again. Recently, when we looked again for another last minute trip, I noticed a studio was available; however, it said double air mattress. That is not the room we booked earlier, so look at the description of the room carefully.

Room Tip: Look at description of rooms each one is sort of different

Bluefin Bay was the perfect place for a short post-New Year's getaway! We knew we wanted to go up north an do a few winter activities, but don't have our own equipment. We could borrow ice skates, snow shoes, and skies at the drop of a hat. They also provided maps that were easy to follow and helped us find certain destinations we were looking for. Our unit looked right out over the water and we enjoyed lighting a cozy fire every evening when we got back for the night. Th restaurant at Bluefin Bay was delicious and convenient as it was just a shot block away. This is a great place for a couple or a family who wants to get up to the north shore without having to lug their skis and snow shoes and hockey sticks. We plan to come up here again and already look forward to it!

We spent five day and four nights at bluefin bay. it was amazing experience in our first visit to the north shore. the location is just perfect because it is 20 min far from grand marias , 45 min far for gooseberry. 15 min far from lutesn and cascades. next to temprance river. great access to the most beautiful trails in the area. the activities team are just amazing. Suzy-the activities director- is wonderful and very helpful. if you go there just try their activities, they are all free and very well chosen. you can get free bikes, free hicking guide, free kayak, free Yoga, free hicking materials, campfire and more and more free activities. Very friendly and clean room with nice decoration. the grill resturant is excellent. We'll come back!

Room Tip: you don't need to spend too much money on the front room if you like outdoor activities and you...

This was our third spring/summer visit at Bluefin, and we are already discussing our visit next year. We stay in their Grand Superior Master Suite and they are right on the water, so you wake up to the sound of waves and the big windows (second floor units) provide spectacular views. It is a one room suite with a whirlpool in room. Also has a fireplace which we didn't use and a nice 2 person shower. We ate breakfasts and dinner at the Grille and food and service were very good. Of note is that when we first arrived and noted that one of our window blinds was crooked and wasn't able to be raised to the top. We placed a call to front desk and in less than 5 minutes someone was there who looked at it and determined that it needed to be replaced, he asked us what time would work for someone to come and do it. Long story short it was done when we were gone and whole thing was very efficient and smooth. Our focus when we go up north is hiking on the Superior Hiking Trail, but there are many activities available through Bluefin if you are so inclined, pretty much something for everyone there. Great place.

Room Tip: We've always stayed in the Grand Master Suites, each time a different one but they all have the...
