My husband and I stayed Saturday Jan 1 after skiing at Wild Mountain and you can literally walk to 3 restaurants/bars. The suite has everything you need and the little details were really neat. We are not really antique or nick-nacky people but we found the little touches very unique. The caretakers were very nice and helpful. We liked that the Jail Suite is a separate structure so we don't have to worry about how late we played our music (bring your own if you come) or making noise too late. I also don't like to be woken up early. They serve breakfast in your suite which is great, I don't like being on a schedule for breakfast and being forced to sit with other people and make small talk in the morning. Borders Bar and Grille was our favorite local place and we loved Wild Mountain for skiing. The suite is bigger than the pictures make it look. We would go back and would recommend to others.

We stayed in the Overlook suite for a weekend. The suite includes a bedroom with a queen bed, a living room with a full futon and a wood stove, a kitchen with a table, sink, small fridge and microwave, a TV room with a love seat, a bathroom with a clawfoot tub (no shower) and a bedroom off the bathroom with a twin bed. You enter the suite up outdoor stairs from the back of the house into the bedroom with the queen bed. There is another entrance to the suite from stairs in the house into the living room, but explanation is given about that entrance.

That's a lot of square footage for a suite and especially for a B&B. But the ceilings are low, so it is not a great place for tall people. The ceiling height ranges from about 6'4" to 6'9" throughout the suite.

It's also not a B&B like I'd typically think of a B&B. There isn't someone to greet you or give you advice on what are the best local restaurants, attractions, or places to visit (It didn't appear that the owners live there). They also don't serve breakfast in one main central location, so you don't get to meet the other guests.

It would then seem that this would be a good place for those who want some privacy. However, breakfast is brought to the room, and in the Overlook suite, the people who serve breakfast bring it through the bedroom even though there is an entrance to the Overlook suite into the living room. I personally found it quite odd that someone would walk through the bedroom to the opposite site of the house with breakfast when there is an entrance more suited to "public" entry into the suite. So don't think you can sleep in and they'll leave breakfast for you!

Many B&Bs make a point of serving impressive breakfasts. This is not one of them. Breakfast was OK, but nothing worth noting. They bring juice and you can make your own coffee in the pot provided (or tea or hot chocolate).

Having only a bath tub is nice because it makes you take some time to relax, which is perfect when on vacation. The bed had a plastic lined mattress cover, which probably makes sense, but wasn't all that great for sleeping. The suite would probably feel nice and cozy in the winter, but it has no outdoor seating area, so in the summer it seemed a bit stifling to have to stay inside. There is a window air conditioner in the bigger bedroom though in case it gets too hot.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay, the rooms were comfortable and Taylors Falls and St. Croix Falls are cute towns to explore, but it isn't somewhere I'd make a point of staying again.

The Old Jail is unique among the B & B's we have visited. It consists of four units: the three-story main building, formerly a two story stable building that was set on top of a one-story brewery/saloon, contains the Overlook Suite on the top floor, the Balcony Suite on the second floor, and the Cave Suite on the ground floor. The separate Jail Suite (where we have stayed) is the original Taylors Falls jail building, constructed in 1884. On our first visit, the owner graciously showed us through all of the suites, and we would gladly stay in any of them.

The Jail is a tiny cottage containing a separate kitchen with fridge, cooktop and microwave, a living room with LCD TV/DVD player and several shelves of books, full bath, and an upstairs loft with a full-sized bed. There is a back patio area which faces Angel Hill, and two very comfortable chairs in front of the building if you care to look down on the city of Taylors Falls. A large grill is available for guests' use, and there's also a fire ring for bonfires if desired. The building contains many interesting antiques, and an extremely comfortable sofa and bed. There's a wood-burning stove in addition to the baseboard heat, plus an air conditioner for hot days. The kitchen is equipped with anything you could need to cook a full meal, plus a wall-mounted antique coffee grinder (complete with beans), popcorn, and chocolates.

Breakfasts are generous and delicious, with plenty of iced juice and lovely fresh fruit. Several excellent restaurants are within walking distance, and several others within driving distance.

For anyone who is interested in ghosts, the Jail building is supposedly haunted--previous guests have described spectral encounters in the journal, and the B & B has been written up in at least one book of Minnesota haunted properties. We never saw him/her, however.

After two stays, the Old Jail feels like home to us, and Don the owner and Heather the manager are like our friends. We can recommend this place wholeheartedly.
