“Unbidden Hideaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2013

An extensive menu usually means poor food....not so here!! There is an interesting choice of meat, poultry and seafood dishes that are fresh, perfectly seasoned and melt-in-your mouth delicious. The personal service, upscale north woods romantic cabin ambience and lively social atmosphere are entertaining and endearing!! We will drive 2 hrs just for an early evening dinner at this little foodie get-away!

“Love it iconoclastically”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2013 via mobile

The parking can be challenging, there's always a wait, it's noisy and crowded, and you'll have a good time.
Prices are good, the food is sometimes surprisingly good, but often comfortingly predictable and good enough.
Phil, the owner, is Greek, so you'll see perfect overlays of that cuisine with some dishes. He does not try to reinvent boiled water. He knows his audience, and plays to them quite well.
If you are a food snob or only deign yourself worthy of haute cuisine, Phil's is not for you. They also have an outrageous mark up on basic wines. The Malbec is respectable and within a working stiff's budget. This is not a wine place (c'mon-- Greeks, Retsina?) Have a mixed libation or a beer from their rustic and lively bar.
The duck is good, the steak is good, the salads and potato dishes are good. I've had the orzo, which has been hit or miss. Skip the rest, unless there's a local fish special. My mom and my teens like the penne... but, ugh; with feta. (They are members of Phil's audience).
Service is normally great, with veteran servers, some there 18+ years! I had an awful experience last time, but every dog deserves one bite.
This is a good place to bring a group of people with divergent tastes. There's a little something for everyone, and it's not the usual mall or chain restaurant solution. Some of the specials have been quite interesting, and pretty good. But basic good value, kitschy iconoclastic setting, and family run/family friendly are the key notes at Phil's Tara Hideaway (btw, an actual old mobster hideaway)!

“Unique dining experience, good food.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2013

Reliably good food and service at reasonable prices. Always a number one choice with our kids when they are home to visit. Prime rib is great, walleye and Greek meal choices. It is a little loud, so may not be for everyone. Cocktails are great, love that they have an outdoor patio waiting area now:)

“Will keep coming back”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2013

I almost always have the walleye which is probably my favorite fresh water fish. The halibut special was excellent on one visit as was the Greek combination dinner on another (the owners are Greek). It can be a tight squeeze in there at times but always worth the wait. Locals know that this is the place for consistently good food and a good time!

“Delicious food but loud atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 24, 2013

My husband and I went here for dinner as we were staying overnight at a B&B in Stillwater. The food was wonderful! I had the stuffed trout and my husband had the pork chop - delicious! The atmosphere is very loud and the tables are quite close together so it was difficult for my husband and I to hold a conversation. We were at a table for two in a corner and it was still loud. I enjoyed our experience but would not come here if you are looking for a restaurant where you can have quality time and a nice conversation.
