“Interesting place”

Joseph Wolf Brewery Cave Tours
Reviewed April 3, 2013

Toured the caves with my spouse and our adult children. Maybe because it was during the winter months, but the tour seemed a little disorganized. We were walking through the wine shop and someone asked us if we wanted to go on a cave tour. We were intructed to go over to Luna Rossa restaurant and to sit at the bar and wait. At that time the bartender came over and asked my spouse how many were taking the tour. The cost was $7.00 per person. The tour is approximately 45 minutes long. There were about 15 of us on the tour.

The caves were man made, and the guide explains the history of the caves, how they were used for the brewery and later as a tourist attraction. Interesting piece of Minnesota history, and the guide shared little tidbits along the way. After the tour, were able to sample some wine.

If you enjoy Minnesota History and/or caves then visit out the Joseph Wolf Brewery Cave Tours.

So I bought Groupon for 2 cave tours, a bottle of wine and an appetizer from Luna Rossa in Stillwater, MN for pretty cheap a few months back. You can read my review on the Luna Rossa restaurant separately but in a word, Fantastic!

The owner of the Luna Rossa Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar, Raffaele Virgillo, is also the owner of the old Joseph Wolf Brewery Cave tours as well and actually guides the tours of the old brewery caves himself. The day we went all of the tours were large groups (about 25+) and we just about full for the day so we were lucky to get in on the last one.

Raffaele gave a fantastic history lesson on how Joseph Wolf & co. started the brewery back in the late 1800's and gave a detailed timeline on what happened to the property on up until when he bought it from Victoria's in 2000. It is not the fanciest tour on the planet, but the caves and their rich Stillwater history are worth the tour. Actually it was Raffaele's charm in delivering the tour that made it worthwhile for me & my wife. He was a very gracious and proud tour guide (pretty funny guy too) and you can see he has a lot of love & pride put into the tour as well as his restaurant and other Stillwater businesses.

It is not a very long or expensive tour. I believe normal price is $7 for adults for a tour that can be 30 to 45 minutes. At the end of the tour he gave everyone a taste of one of the Wine Bar's signature beers or wines which was a really nice touch as well. So if you love your Minnesota History and/or caves & beer then check out the Joseph Wolf Brewery Cave Tours and while you're at it, grab a bite to eat at Luna Rossa restaurant next door.
