“Excellent spot and hosts!”
Reviewed August 6, 2013 via mobile

I have to admit I was a little nervous on the drive down to the Lodge. Steve, the owner, had given me prior warning of recent weather and the effect on the unsealed roads, together with the fact my car is rather low slung and certainly no 4wd!
We negotiated the road down, bumpy and wet, to arrive at the lodge. My fears from the exhausting drive immediately evaporated when I saw the lodge, it's location and its views, quite simply WOW!
I have to say this place is one of the best places we have had the pleasure to stay in. Contemporary, tasteful styling, excellent hosts in Steve and Gail, their excellent recommendations on sights and food options (which on the island are surprisingly limited) made for a truly relaxing stay, even to the point that Steve recognised my obvious city folk fire building abilities, that after a long, but rewarding, day travelling the island sights, we get home to find a roaring log fire!
Gail - Lulu has just finished the Shapelle book, which made for a much shorter drive back to Melbourne :)

My wife and I stayed for two nights at the Lodge and hoped that we had stayed longer! There's lots to see at KI and it was a pity that we did not have time to explore the areas around the lodge. For a city dweller like myself, the Lodge completes the KI experience.

Steve greeted us every morning and checked if we needed help in any way. He had kindly offered us fresh eggs from the Chooks (Chicken) and they were really the best eggs.

Amenities provided were of superior quality. There is even a fireplace for you to play with. Kitchen is fully-equipped and lots of condiments to select from. Bed was comfortable as well.

The drive from Penneshaw along Willoughby Road can be a bit bumpy especially when I was not used to driving on unpaved roads. Just keep driving until you see a lighthouse.

Very comfortable, private hideaway with secluded beach, stunning views of rugged coastline. This is the perfect getaway with your loved one, close family or group of friends. We stayed in a self-contained large studio with modern bathroom and kitchenette. Fabulous views out the window doors to the ocean and cliffs. We spent time relaxing, enjoying the views. We also rode the quad bike out to a nature walk down to the light house above the cliffs. We finished with a bonfire and picnic on the beach.

Room Tip: All rooms enjoy the fabulous view. The main house can even be hired for a larger group.

KI is beautiful, the people friendly and the wildlife fantastic.

Steve @ Sea Dragon Lodge made us feel welcome & comfortable, the lodge has all the amenities of home with the added bonus of a million dollar view, private beach & plenty of visiting wildlife; Chooky made herself known within minutes, tapping on the door for attention!

The 20 minute walk to see the sunrise over the ocean at the lighthouse is recommended.

Whilst the road to Cape Willoughby is not tarmac, it is still a well maintained gravel road & our Subaru had no problems on it.

We'd definitely stay here again.

My husand and I stayed for 6 nights as part of our honeymoon. It was the perfect place to spend some time relaxing, enjoying magnificent scenery and an amazing view. The sunsets and the view over the private beach were breathtaking. When we arrived on a cold and rainy day, we were welcomed with a roaring fire, and a warm and extremely comfortable lounge. The owner offered us fresh eggs every day, gave us freshly caught fish and offered to take us to see special sights in the area. Very helpful and friendly, but not at all instrusive. The kitchen is well equipped and the lodge is nicely decorated and clean. For some people, the location may seem daunting - the lodge is located in the far east of the island, so it takes 2 hours to get to the west coast. However, there are so many things to see on the east and south coasts and the dudley peninsula, this is not at all a burden (just give yourself enough time to do the west coast too). Aside from all the sights on KI, "musts" include: taking a bottle of wine and picnic to the private beach, buying fresh KI produce and cooking it in the kitchen or on the bbq, driving a short distance to Dudley wines for a lamb pizza, sitting on the couch in front of the fire with a book or game (and another glass of wine!) During our time on the island, we saw plenty of kangaroos, echidnas, seals and even a koala in the wild.

My wife & I travelled to KI recently with another couple and spent 4 days at Sea Dragon Lodge. It is one of those places that when you walk through the back door and out into lounge and then take in the view, it simply takes your breath away. The views from the lounge and both the main bedrooms are stunning and a large deck running the full length of the Lodge provides further opportunity to enjoy them. In fact, we had most of our meals out on the deck.
The lodge was very clean and we really appreciated all the little unexpected extras, especially the fresh farm eggs provided by the owners Steve & Gail.
There are quite a few things to do at the Lodge and nearby. Some of things we enjoyed the most included:
· The beach walk and in particular returning by the creek track that passes through a quiet and very secluded valley with lots of wildlife
· Champagne at sunset in the beach gazebo
· The walk to Cape Willoughby Lighthouse and the Devil’s Kitchen an amazing rock chasm near the lighthouse
· Strolling along uninhabited Antechamber bay
· Swimming in the pristine water at Pink Bay.
The hosts Steve and Gail who live onsite were very friendly and helpful without intruding in any way. We certainly intend to go back again.

“Great Fishing”

Sea Dragon Lodge not only provided a fantastic place to stay, but their little private Beach called Pink Bay, turned on some great fishing.

While my partner sat in the beach Gazebo with a book and a nice glass (or two) of wine, I tried my luck rock fishing. The rocks were quite safe and sheltered and I was able to get my lure amongst some great 3kg Salmon. These are a terrific fighting fish and make good eating as sashimi or cooked fresh. I only kept one for dinner, but released about 6 other beauties.

The next day I tried some bottom fishing from the rocks and managed to score a couple of nice flathead. The owner tells me that 70cm flathead are not unusual. These weren’t that big , but still fed the two us.

The Lodge has great ocean views looking across Backstairs passage to the Mainland and we liked the deck and being able to enjoy the views while eating.

My partner was most impressed with how clean and tidy the Lodge was.

Steve and Gail the owners were very friendly. The fishing advice from Steve was invaluable.

We can thoroughly recommend Sea Dragon Lodge.
