Had a very interesting stay! Really enjoyed getting to visit with the original builders grandson! Wow! The food was really good. Be sure and make reservations for dinner. The breakfast is served at 9 am. Plan accordingly.

Room Tip: Stay in France's room! Great view!

We stayed August 17th in John's Cottage and it was pure bliss. The weather was amazing, the cottage was cozy. We sipped wine while watching the gorgeous view of the sunset across the lake. The corner whirlpool was intimate and relaxing. This is definitely a place to fall in love all over again.
I cannot comment on dinner, as there was a private party booked that evening so we decided to go to Zorbas for dinner and music on the beach. Breakfast was delicious, and Allen, the grandson of John Spicer, was very pleasant and welcoming as he regalled us with tales of early years at the castle.
We will most definitely be back and want to thank the Spicer Family and Staff for a wonderful stay and for their gracious hospitallity.

Thank you for taking the time to post your kind review about your recent stay at our Inn. You are right, the sunsets are gorgeous and we have been told that that is why John Spicer selected this piece of land to build this Inn.

I will definitely pass on your wonderful comments to our staff. We look forward to your return visit to our Inn.

Is it old ? - yes, Does it need some maintenance ? - yes Are some of the rooms small? - yes

That being said it a B&B filled with history and charm with owners still being relatives from the original owners. You can tell they love this place and want to keep it in the family. I'm sure that is hard with the taxes and upkeep. The rooms were clean and charming. The breakfast provided with the room were great. The views of the lake are stunning. You do need to choose your room carefully if you have any mobility problems. I have had both knees replace and did find the bathroom uncomfortable. If you do have any major mobility or handicap issues. I would stay elsewhere as there are steep steps and rooms aren't set up for handicapped. Otherwise If your looking for somewhere unique to stay, I would not hesitate to stay here.

If your'e looking for your average run of the mill, Hotel style room - this isn't for you. But if you're looking for an older grand home (turned into a Bed & Breakfast) with tons of character, a delicious breakfast, with beautiful views of the lake - this is a cool place! It's located in a secluded section on the lake, very peaceful and relaxing.
As mentioned in other reviews, during breakfast Alan Spicer shares tales of his family and the Spicer Castle. He's very interesting and has a wealth of information of the family and the area.
I stayed in the "Amy" room. Clean with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom is small, the floors creak, there's no TV (which I was happy about) and you have to step up into the tub/shower - but knowing it's a Bed & Breakfast, it was a relaxing and refreshing change of pace from your average hotel room.

We loving being on Green Lake in Spicer, and this is the second time we have stayed at the Castle. If you want the Ritz, you are in the wrong place. You have to appreciate the history and charm of the Castle. Our breakfast in the morning was delicious, and Alan Spicer personally meets the guests at breakfast to share some history on the house. The rooms are a little small but very clean. My only complaints were that there was only one mirror in the room, and only one trash container. Very comfortable beds, and an amazing view of the lake to wake up to. We stayed in Ruth's room but next visit will choose a larger room or a cabin.

Room Tip: Spend a little more to get a larger room

The place looks quite rundown from the outside - definitely some deferred maintenance there - but my room was cute & cozy, and the relatively untouched 1893 vibe was charming. Breakfast was great, and the owner, a gentleman who looked about 80, stopped by with his coffee and regaled us with tales of life at the Spicer Castle in his youth (he is the grandson of the founder of the town, who built it). Very reasonable, and a real treat if you don't mind a bit of historical funkiness. Oh, and being on beautiful Green Lake doesn't hurt!

Thank you for your review. We are happy to read that you enjoyed your stay at our historic Inn. I agree that Green Lake is beautiful and great to look at or perhaps enjoy a canoe trip to see our B&B from the lake.

We enjoyed last year's visit so much, we decided to stay at the Castle for our anniversary again. This time, we stayed in John's Cottage. It was very clean and comfortable. The whirlpool was nice. We also used the fireplace one night. We did have a little trouble lighting the fire, the matches weren't very good. The bathroom is definitely bigger than the one in Raymond's Cabin (where we stayed last year). We had the evening special from the restaurant - the black & bleu cavatappi - which was excellent. The next evening, we enjoyed the murder mystery dinner. We had the chicken and it was also very well done. The breakfasts were delicious and filling. The presentations by Allen were very interesting and informative. It's nice to get away for a while - no kids and no TV! The wifi could be better, it didn't always work in the cottage. The staff does a great job making sure everything runs smoothly.
