Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Minnesota's first iron ore mine-the Soudan Mine-opened in 1882. Operations went underground by 1892 since the ore body continued deep into the ground. The mine's value was in the special kind of ore it produced. The ore's high oxygen content was used to make high-quality steel in open-hearth furnaces. When technology changed, the ore from the mine was no longer needed. Low-cost ores of the Mesabi Range took over, and Soudan Mine closed in 1962. Today, you can travel 1/2 mile underground and ride a train car back to last area that the miners worked.

“Excellent Tour”
Reviewed August 21, 2013

Your tour begins above ground as you read the history of the Soudan Mine and see all the equipment that was used for excavation. Your tour guide gives you a quick overview and a hard hat before heading into the mine. They warn you about claustraphobia and give you a chance to change your mind. We begin our descent in an old mining cage just like the real miners used. You are packed into the cage tightly and it is a noisy bumpy descent 1/2 mile underground. You then get in ming cars that take you further into the mined area. Guides are extremely interesting and interactive. You get a real idea of the tortuous work these men did day in and day out. Very educational for all ages.

“A Day Underground”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

This tour is a must if you are looking to learn more about mining in northern Minnesota. Our tour guide, Karl, did a great job helping us to see, hear and feel what it might have been like to work as a miner in the 1800-1900's. Very educational--for families with children in elementary-high school.

“They don't come any better than this.”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

Descend about a mile in an old mine shaft and enter another world. 100 years ago men were
mining iron ore. Today it's scientists measuring neutrinos from the Fermilab at the University
of Chicago. You cannot imagine the scale of the operation. The contrast is breath taking, don't miss this one. A State of Minnesota Park.

“Very Interesting Tour”
Reviewed July 29, 2013 via mobile

We went on the tour with 4 other people. All of the guides/workers are knowledgeable. The underground mine tour takes 1 1/2 hours. It starts with a short video.
The gift shop is small but has a wide variety of things to buy, focusing on geology and MN state parks.
I recommend this for anyone interested in history, MN, or mining.

“Would go again!”

Went on the tour and highly recommend it. Our Guide, Karel was funny and entertaining. After the tour you can walk through the grounds at your own pace. Would like to go back again.
