“nice camp sites right on lake superior”
Reviewed May 31, 2011

Camping on Temperence State park has some great site right on the lake or overlooking the lake. we stayed on site 31-
was nice but you could hear the car traffic, great view of the lake.
The park rangers were not so friendly a little up tight.
It did rain alot one day so we went to Bluefin Bay they have a decent Happy hour 4-6pm with food.
lots of spectacular hikes right close to the park.

“Rain or Shine this is a beauty”
Reviewed October 5, 2009

Take a picnic lunch and some water shoes & walk IN THE RIVER (in the summer)! Pull out your lunch and enjoy a peaceful gorgeous view! We parked on the side of the road closest to the river and the path is well-worn all the way up! It is simply stunning.

“Not the place for rustic camping”
Reviewed August 7, 2009

I live in a big city and when i go camping I want it to be very rustic. Temperance is a very pretty park but our campsite was literally 20 feet from the busy Hwy 61, we would of spent the entire time listening to cars pass by. The campsites themselves are very small at the upper campground and you can see your neighbors clearly. We checked out a couple in the lower and they were even less private although the highway noise was less noticeable. In the end we lost our money on the reservation for one night and headed up to a national forest campground. The waterfalls in this park are beautiful however, and well worth the hike.

“Temperance River”
Reviewed January 1, 2009

We love Temperance River! A few years ago we took a tour of each of the state parks along the north shore and we all agreed that Temperance was our favorite. We have stayed at both the upper and lower campgrounds and we really enjoy the lower more. Spots 40, 41 & 42 are great because they are almost on the lake shore. You walk out of your site, across the gravel road and you're there!

We camped at Temperance River in June of 08; five adults, five kids. There are two general camping areas; one higher above Lake Superior and one lower near Lake Superior. We had three sites in the lower area. If you desire a spot right near the lake, the lower sites are for you...within a minute's walk to lakeshore. Spectacular waterfalls. The kids disappeared along the shore line exploring on rocks daily (not a bad amenity!). One particular hike that begins nearby across Hwy. 61, follows the River westward and is wonderful; many access points to the river and many breathtaking views to just sit near waterfalls. One concern with the lower site; there is no shower facility so you have to hike up to the upper area to shower. Not a big inconvenience, but something to consider. All-in-all, we recommend the lower area due to its proximity to Lake Superior. Also, the lower site has no electrical. One other note, keep in mind that, after registering, you need to get back on Hwy. 61 and drive a short distance south, across the river, to access the lower sites.
