“Unique train hotel! Loved it & will come again!”
Reviewed October 11, 2008

We stayed at the Best Western Bandana on the Friday of Labor Day weekend 2008 and had an absolutely wonderful stay.
The location is in a very nice area, and the proximity to the State Fair was great. The hotel even provided free shuttle service, so that were able to enjoy our day at the fair and the evening Prairie Home Companion show, and we didn't have to fight traffic and pay for parking. Nice!
Contrary to another reviewer, we loved the historic aspect of this building: concrete floors with train tracks running through the lobby, original wooden beams exposed throughout, it was refreshing to not spend another night in a "cookie-cutter" hotel! (Authentic steam loco out front!)
Our room was very large, top-notch and well-equipped (beautiful bathroom!) and the sliding-glass door allowed us to walk directly out from the room onto the pool area (w/ TWO jacuzzis!).
Continental breakfast was above average, as was the service. (The breakfast server was amazing!)
We're planning on driving up (1,000 miles each way) sometime to see Garrison Keillor again, and when we do we will definitely stay at the Best Western Bandana!

We were satisfied with our experience at this hotel. We had a room overlooking the courtyard and pool area, and we were concerned that it might be noisy, but it wasn't. Many of the rooms face the inner courtyards. It should be noted that there is no elevator, which could be a problem for some people wanting to stay on the second level.
We liked the location.

After reading the negative reviews we were somewhat reluctant to stay at the hotel. But, It is very close to the Minnesota State Fair - our destination- and we hoped it would be acceptable. This hotel has always had ambiance that just won't quit! It was very creatively inserted into what used to be a major railroads' locomotive shop and the tracks, concrete floors, huge doors timbered ceiling, are all still there! (Even some of the smoke smell!) We have stayed in the building several times over the years. Originally a Holiday Inn Express, Best Western recently took it over and frankly they are not putting enough into it. It is showing it's lack of attention. The plants outside were dying from lack of water; earlier reviewers comments that cleaning was inadequate were confirmed during our stay, and we would add that although the the rooms were roomy (no they do not all have microwaves and refrigerators), the beds are overdue for normal replacement.
Cleanlyness: We counted 9 used band-aids on the carpet and pool surround. We found, tucked up in the curtain on the shower rod in our room a used - still wet - wash cloth. These things are turn-offs but may be because Best Western is just getting it's act together. Best Western has addressed the slippery pool surround mentioned in an earlier review with a nice new exposed aggragate surface. The facility was not as praiseworthy as we customerily expect - and write about - from Best Western.
We felt it was OK, but certainly not the way it used to be under Holiday Inn. We give it good marks for the breakfast, the wonderful service to and from the State Fair, and the "we are trying" attitude of the staff. We will stay there again next year during the State Fair but sincerely hope they hire some more staff and improve attention to detail.

WOW.........where do I start. Oh yeah, DON'T STAY HERE!!!!!! I was appalled when I checked in to this hotel. The dirty concrete floors, open ceiling beams filled with cobwebs, and the smell of the building was an absolute turn off, I thought about turning around and walking right back out....but decided to give it a chance and check out the room first. Big mistake, it only got worse. The room was absolutely disgusting, I'm sure the walls and door had not been cleaned for years, there was a thick yellow film across the door, and the room reeked! The bed was made and the floors were vacuumed but that was about all they did to clean after the last guest. After about 15 minutes, my husband and I decided that staying here was out of the question. We went to check out......I was polite and quite when discussing the condition of our room, they offered another room but we declined after seeing the condition of the first room. We were then told by staff we were free to leave and that was it. No apologies, nothing! The staff at the front desk was less than enthused to be there and I don't blame them they probably have to deal with this a lot.

I really liked the railroad theme and someone did a nice job renovating this old building 20 some years ago, but it is really looking down at the heels. Our room was large and the beds were fine, but it was not clean. Dirty scuffed up walls, a divider wall that was so dirty it was sticky to touch, etc. The lack of ventilation was also a problem -stale stuffy air and no windows or air controls. The pool area was filthy with cracked floors, dirty towels all over, etc. The property is a nice idea, but needs better execution.

We stayed at the Best Western Bandana Square Hotel in St. Paul, MN for only one night. We attended a concert at the Excel Center.

We had an excellent stay. Our room was nice with a refrigerator and microwave. Not sure if all rooms have this but I believe it is available on request. The bed was very comfortable.

The hotel has a very unique historical atmosphere about it. It was a former train station. They still have some train tracks running through the continental breakfast area and some of the ceilings still have the original beams. It's amazing how they can blend some of the original architecture with modern day conveniences. I didn't use the pool but it looked very inviting.

The staff was excellent. Anything you asked for they were there to help you out. We really appreciated the hospitality.

There was a sports bar that was easy walking distance from the hotel that had good food. The Minnesota State Fairgrounds are also very close by.
