Owner description: The state's first maintenance location for the railroad now houses quite a museum

This museum is in a real old roundhouse near downtown, and features trains, streetcars, and lots of interactive exhibits. Very popular with families and kids. The Transportation Museum also runs the Como-Harriet streetcar museum near Lake Harriet in Minneapolis. These are first-rate attractions and very popular, so don't be surprised if the JSR is packed on weekends.

Can't say enough good things about this living museum. A co-worker went there with his son who spent all afternoon there. We had a great time playing with the toy trains, exploring the roundhouse and taking a 10 mph ride on a real train. There are a lot of things to look at such as model trains, a working shop, old dishware, old uniforms, movies, and best of all, it didn't get scrapped in our society which tends to throw away old things. You have to go.

This place is a really great place to visit with the family. The volunteers are totally awesome. One retired veteran took my two boys, ages 9 and 13, and showed them the finer points of driving a train and how the engineer and conductor work together. He also toured our family through the repair shop. He was great with the kids and adults in our group. They have so much good stuff going on here that we plan to go back again another time and also take in a dinner train excursion. Definitely worthwhile for the entire family.

The volunteers are knowledgeable and so happy to answer questions. Getting a look at the engine and cars renovation area is so cool. Caboose ride is fun for all.

If you have kids that love Thomas the Tank Engine or trains in general, this is the place to take them. The historic aspect is great for the adults and the kids love the trains and roundhouse. Perfect for a Saturday morning outing.
