“Food is the priority which is superb, decor nothing fancy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2012

This is an intimate little restaurant off the beaten path. St. Paul is known for its tight neighborhoods, locals keep this unassuming place busy. I've heard their ribs are great, it's the fish or pork, or pasta specials that have us coming back time and again. The tables are tightly packed and it can get loud, but once the food dishes start arriving, the din fades into the background.

“Consistently good”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2012

We live in St. Paul and go to 128 frequently. There is always a vegetarian, fish, pork, beef and pasta dish on the menu, as well as the ribs. You cannot go wrong--everything they do is great. The roasted garlic appetizer is a favorite. The restaurant is in the basement of an apartment building. It is not fancy but is cozy and comfortable. 128 was a bit off for a period around 2008, but are back to their original standards. Folks are right about parking--use the valet service.

“Hidden Gem!”

Tucked in a small space across from St. Thomas, this is very good dining at a good price.

“Best ribs in town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2011

I recently dined at the 128 Cafe with my husband and friends on a Friday night to eat ribs. This is NOT a rib joint, but definitely has the best ribs I have eaten in the Twin Cities. The ribs can be ordered as a half or full rack. We all ordered the half rack which is a generous portion. The ribs were "fall of the bone" tender with a little bit, but not too much spice, and absolutely delicious. The sides included garlic mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. These are so much tastier (and healthier) than the typical sloppy coleslaw and french fries typically served as sides to ribs.
Our party of four shared one of their signature appetizers of a plate of roasted garlic, goat cheese, apples, chutney, and bread. It too was excellent.
While there were a number of dessert options, we each had a cup of Izzies ice cream with the cafes' home made chocolate sauce.
Service was attentive and timely. This cafe is a cozy, intimate atmosphere which is quite allowing one to converse with table mates unlike so many of todays noisy restaurants.
I have dined here a number of times and have never been disappointed.
