The beach itself is large and has good sand. The lake is a little low, which means the beach is even larger now. The water depth almost out to the first buoy is very shallow and perfect for kids. There aren't many weeds either. The problem I had was w/the lifeguards - basically they start the day w/5 minutes of announcements over the PA - the rules of the beach. I know rules are needed and that's not the problem - it's the attitude they have and basically the "don't have fun" approach they take. I happened to be sitting near some ppl from Long Island, NY who bursted out laughing after the announcements - they couldn't believe how many rules there were and asked if you could actually swim! I used to life guard at both outdoor pools, indoor pools and on Lake Michigan, it's a serious job but the lifeguards at Lake Phalen need to lighten up a little bit.
