At the Twin Cities Model Railroad Museum from the Saturday after Thanksgiving to the last Saturday in February, the extensive layouts are set up to be illuminated by streetlights, railcar interior lights, scaled holidays lights, etc for a magical display for all ages. Ramps and steps make the view accessible for all ages - some of the displays include opportunities for visitors to control features.

My visits to see this huge miniature railroad set-up could only be described with awe. There is so much going on. Anyone with even a minute curiosity regarding train sets needs to see this display on steroids. IT IS AMAZING. Want to know what to do with the kids for an afternoon, or take someone who has seen it all???? This would be an apt choice.

My husband, 4 yr. old, 2 yr old & myself spent 1 1/2 hrs here & could have easily stayed longer if we didn't have an 8 hour drive ahead of us the day we visited. We spent the 1st part in the Model Railroad Museum that is a reproduction of the Twin Cities & beyond back in the day. The detail on everything was amazing. We walked around it a few times & each time we'd see something we didn't see the other times. Around the room there were pictures on the wall of what things looked like in the past as well. It was interesting since we are from out of state, to learn about MN.
We also went next door to the Toy Train Division. There are all different sizes of trains here, some tiny trains & some really big ones! There are a few displays that you can actually touch & work them. My kids loved being able to control the Thomas the Train display. We all liked the Amusement Park display, it at at least 10 different accessories that we could control.

There is an admission, $6 for adults & kids 5 & up. The Toy Train Division is only open on the weekends, I would recommend going on the weekend to see both & get your money's worth. There is free parking & the staff is very friendly.

Awesome place. A hidden treasure in the Twin Ciites. A must-see! I don't even have a keen interest in model trains but this museum keeps me going back. The staff are all volunteers and the displays are amazing!! Bring your friends and family. A spot not to be missed!

The museum has two buildings and they have different themes which just adds to the fun of the visit. They have plenty of hands on buttons to push and even a number of layouts that the kids can directly control the trains on. Wooden train layouts for the younger ones (many of them) and some fantastic full scenario/buildings layouts for the older ones to study and enjoy. We spent 1.5hrs at the museum and our 8 year old did not want to leave, you could easily spend a good 2hrs without the kids getting bored. Staff are friendly and we will be heading back but also with Grandma and Grandad next time.
