We were in St. Paul for a concert held at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium and found this boutique hotel online the day before. It was only a couple blocks from the concert and a very reasonable price so we decided to try it out, and we're so glad we did! From the time of check in and check out I experienced some of the best customer service in a hotel I have ever had. The manager, Jeff is a doll and caters to your every need. Not to mention the rooms are gorgeous with hardwood floors, tiled bathrooms, large flat screen tvs, keurig coffee makers with caribou coffee, and even alarms clocks with an ipod dock. The beds are covered with white down comforters and high thread count sheets, and were incredibly comfortable. Overall, the experience was wonderful. We cannot wait to come back and will definitely be recommending this hotel to all friends and family.

We chose this hotel on a combination of location, price and other reviews.

The location is currently hindered by the street being dug up - possibly part of the light rail project in St Paul. The jack hammers didn't start too early but were certainly easily heard from our 11th floor room. Satellite Navigation tries to take you down Cedar Street which is blocked off due to the road works however its easy to do a block.

The room itself was quite small with wooden flooring. There was a large plasma TV in the room however this wasn't working during our stay. The TV itself hangs on a bracket from the wall with cables stretching across the length of the wall creating a rather untidy look. The room was clean and bed comfortable. View = construction site.

Bathroom is small and dark with flaking paint on ceiling.

The building itself has good character however the elevator and shared spaces should be cleaner.

There weren't many people around that part of town at night.

On Labour Day weekend we took a trip to St Paul. I found this hotel online and chose it because of its location and based on information on their website. I also wanted to stay here because we've never stayed in a boutique hotel before. It was a little hard to get to (downtown St Paul is undergoing some major road construction this year), but once we arrived, we found a beautifully restored, historic property right in the center of downtown.

This was originally the St Paul Athletic Club, and the guest rooms of the hotel occupy floors 10, 11, & 12. Our room (1118) was spacious with nice hardwood floors and a very comfortable queen bed. The bathroom was split, with the toilet and sink in one room, and a very large shower in the other. On the Saturday night, the hotel hosted 3 weddings (we could hear the noise riding up in the elevator), yet couldn't hear a sound in our room. We had a very quiet, restful sleep all 3 nights of our visit.

The desk staff were very helpful and friendly, and made every effort to make our visit a pleasant one. The continental breakfast (located on the 10th floor) could have included a few more items (bananas and boiled eggs would have been nice) and a staff member to ensure everything was stocked (coffee ran out on the Sunday morning). I spite of that, it was still nice and we didn't leave hungry.

Now for location: Hotel 340 is right downtown St Paul, and as such everything is walking distance. The Mississippi River is 1 block away, Science Museum and Xcel Enery Center are right across from each other about 6 blocks away. Restaurants and bars are all within walking distance. Hwy 52, I-94, & I-35 are all only a few minute drive, and from there you can get to wherever you need to go.

I live in the Twin Cities and had no idea this hotel was here. Located on the top floors of the University Club, Hotel 340 provides convenient access to downtown St. Paul. There is a large construction project going on in downtown St. Paul and access to the hotel is difficult, but surprisingly we were not disturbed by construction noise. That being said our room was off of the construction street. Rooms are large, beds and bedding comfortable and upgraded showers were a plus. Hardwood floors in the rooms and ours also had coffee machine and refrigerator - great for our traveling family. Although the University Club does provide a "continental breakfast" (think cereal and bad muffins), there are a few better alternatives within walking distance. Best part about this hotel is its excellent downtown location - within walking distance to the Ordway, Science Museum, and Farmer's Market. A very nice surprise and pleasant alternative to other hotels in the area.

Stayed at this hotel for two nights in June 2011 for a wedding. Could not have asked for anything better. This is the perfect boutique hotel with rooms that are each unique and offer upscale, upgraded decor and amenities. This is a great alternative to all the branded hotels you see everywhere. The manager was great and provided the best service to our entire group. If your looking for luxury with terrific customer service at an affordable price, this is the place to stay! Highly recommended.

The aura is awesome, the history is fantasic, Ryan the manager is doing a great job. I travel 250 days a year all over the globe and this hotel has now become a staple for me for business or pleasure. I can't say enough about it. Get the bigger room for 30 dollars more, trust me you won't regret it. This is not a bed and breakfast, it is a grand hotel. The suite has a sectional couch, 46in TV, free Internet, free dish tv, and the 60000 sq foot athletic club opens labor day. St Paul is awesome during the summer.

The good: Fantastic location if you are in downtown St. Paul, wonderful historic building that has been decently renovated to apartments/hotel. Renovations appear to be ongoing. Our floor had a wonderful lounge area which would be good for sitting with family or friends, and the breakfast dining area is large as well. Breakfast was adequate but not fancy - coffee, juice, boxed cereal and a few pastires.

The bad: St. Paul is confusing enough to navigate, but the hotel does not do enough to help guests find them. The website doesnt say (or didn't when I made my reservation) but the best off-street parking available is in a parking garage across the street. The hotel was unable to tell me when I called what the price per day is to park there (FYI - ~$22/day). My confirmation email stated that the parking garage was connected by skyway, but fails to note *which* skyway to take, and there are no signs at all. Once you get in the building, there is a large poster with "Hotel 340" on it, but again, no direction as to where to check in or that you should take the unmarked door around the corner to get to the elevator. Given that I knew the hotel rooms were only on the upper floors of the building, I thought it might be possible the reception was somewhere up there. It *is* on the 1st Floor, under the giant sign marked "University Club." There is also a with a tiny letter-sized sign propped on the desk saying "Hotel 340." Extremely easy to miss, and its kind of funny that the one sign that is up is for the historic club and not the actual hotel. Hopefully this helps whoever goes after me though!

One final tip - the blinds on the windows don't block out as much light as normal hotel blinds do. I recommend bringing a sleep mask, though the room itself was great, clean, and the bed quite comfortable.
