“Nice hotel, tough to find”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2011

The good: Fantastic location if you are in downtown St. Paul, wonderful historic building that has been decently renovated to apartments/hotel. Renovations appear to be ongoing. Our floor had a wonderful lounge area which would be good for sitting with family or friends, and the breakfast dining area is large as well. Breakfast was adequate but not fancy - coffee, juice, boxed cereal and a few pastires.

The bad: St. Paul is confusing enough to navigate, but the hotel does not do enough to help guests find them. The website doesnt say (or didn't when I made my reservation) but the best off-street parking available is in a parking garage across the street. The hotel was unable to tell me when I called what the price per day is to park there (FYI - ~$22/day). My confirmation email stated that the parking garage was connected by skyway, but fails to note *which* skyway to take, and there are no signs at all. Once you get in the building, there is a large poster with "Hotel 340" on it, but again, no direction as to where to check in or that you should take the unmarked door around the corner to get to the elevator. Given that I knew the hotel rooms were only on the upper floors of the building, I thought it might be possible the reception was somewhere up there. It *is* on the 1st Floor, under the giant sign marked "University Club." There is also a with a tiny letter-sized sign propped on the desk saying "Hotel 340." Extremely easy to miss, and its kind of funny that the one sign that is up is for the historic club and not the actual hotel. Hopefully this helps whoever goes after me though!

One final tip - the blinds on the windows don't block out as much light as normal hotel blinds do. I recommend bringing a sleep mask, though the room itself was great, clean, and the bed quite comfortable.

I have mixed emotions about this hotel. The lobby and front desk is in a beautiful open area with a great look. The rooms are up at the top of the building, and looked great, with hardwood floors. The bed was comfortable, and everything we needed was there.

The bathroom situation was a little strange. Because these rooms used to be half the size, with shared showers down the hall, the room's shower is split from the rest of the facilities. An odd configuration, but we managed to work with it.

The employees were great when available. They seemed to be doing more than one job at a time, so it occasionally took longer to find someone, but once you did, they didn't stop until you were satisfied, and were very flexible with schedules.

Room Tip: Try to get an outer ring room.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel 340 during a trip to St. Paul to see a Wild hockey game. The locations was just perfect. We were able to walk to and from the game even on a cold MN winter night. We stayed in Room 1112. The room was spacious, beautifully decorated, and had decent city views. We loved the hardwood floors and the big comfy king bed. We woke up to a bright sunny room and it made for a wonderful start to our day. The bathroom is tiny, but manageable, The only issue we had during our stay was that we don't know the skyway system very well so it took us a little while to figure out how to get to the hotel from the parking garage. We definately will be staying at Hotel 340 for all future St. Paul stays.

Stayed here three nights for the Final Five Hockey Series. Hotel 340 is located in a beautiful historic building. We booked our room over the internet and arranged for the lower priced room. It was very small but comfortable. There is a small coffee machine in the room, bed and desk. Also had a large flat screen TV. The Athletic Club is closed until May for remodeling. There is not any food served in the building. There is a small bar in the lobby that was opened one night while we were there. We could walk through the skyway system or outside to the Excel. There is a Subway about a block away and a Starbucks, two blocks away.

This hotel more than met our needs. We had done research and knew that we wouldn't have breakfast available. The rooms are very nice and comfortable.

If your travels take you to downtown St Paul, this place is a must. I have stayed everywhere downtown--the dirty Hilton Garden Inn, the over-priced St. Paul Hotel (that doesn't even have coffee makers in the room), the too-far-away Holiday Inn, etc. Now I only stay here. First the rates can't be beat (from $89 for the smaller rooms).
Second, hardwood floors mean they are clean.
Third, the espresso coffee machines in every room.
Fourth, the 100+ channels of Dish TV including several HBOs.
Fifth, most rooms have kitchenettes.
Sixth, it's not on the district heating system--you can actually control the heat in your room unlike the other hotels which are on the downtown district heating system.
It's in the skyway so you don't need to go outside.
Yes, some rooms face the noisy street.
And it is not a full service traditional hotel.
A new health club opens soon on the 5th floor.
If you don't mind not getting hotel points at the chain hotels, consider the Hotel 340.
It's nicer than my apartment!

I loved this place and would definitely stay there again. My room was cheap and available on short notice, and I really dug the roaring 20's decor of the place. My room had a flat-screen tv with full HBO channels, really nice coffee maker (in the full bar with a mini-fridge, microwave, and a full set of dishes??), and an ipod-compatible alarm clock. Strangely, my room had two bathrooms, one of which included a sweet misting shower and view down to a lower roof with a fountain on it. Maybe not the place for full room service, but the concierges were very personable and charming. There is a bottled beer / martini bar on the first floor. I'm not very familiar with St. Paul but was easily able to access the main bus route to the mall of America and the Airport on foot. Check this place out to save a little cash when there is a conference around the corner, I had a great time there!
