This building is the center of the government in Minnesota. It is a stately, historic building and the tour is very educational.

“Beautiful building..”

And fabulous art. The tour guides are well trained and have lots of good stories. A great place to spend an afternoon that few people think about.

“Magnificent building, beautiful interior, great guide”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

Visited here yesterday (Saturday) with spouse. Arrived in time for 10am tour. Doors to Capitol are on time lock, so they do not open until 10am, regardless of how cold, hot or miserable it might be outside. There are several benches where you can wait if you arrive before the doors are unlocked.

Enter through the main entrance up the stairs. Upon entering, make a right turn and go to the tour information desk.

There were just four of us at 10am with MN Historical Society guide Michael (a NY native). There were several groups of Boy Scouts also in the building for a tour (with a different guide) and we barely saw or heard them during our 45 minute tour.

Our first stop was the Governor's Reception Room-gorgeous! We then walked around the building marveling at the beautiful architecture (marble, granite, pipestone, paintings, sculptures!) and saw both the House and Senate chambers, the Supreme Court, and the German Rathskeller (cafeteria). It was a great tour. There is continued restoration/repair work of the building but it doesn't really impact the tour except the chandelier is down as the roof is being repaired. Also some scaffolding around the entrance, but you don't really notice it!

Michael has been leading tours for 15 years and gave a great tour filled with historical facts, interesting trivia, period gossip, and humor. We really enjoyed it! If you have a large group, they do special group tours-call ahead.

Also, the offer special theme tours for a nominal fee. Donations are also requested and appreciated for the general public tour.

A very stately and magnificent capitol building. View from the steps is worth it. Good parking. Don't miss this!

Excellent docent led tour. (Finding an alternative entry is tricky if you do not want to climb the steps.)
