The Covington is a very unique B&B in a tugboat on the Mississippi River, moored at a park across from downtown St Paul. To fully appreciate the Covington, you really have to come prepared to forget about many of the comforts we have come to expect at our places of lodging and appreciate the unique aspects of living on a boat. Unfortunately we were tired travelers with high expectations and the positives just did not outweigh some of the inconveniences. The positives, however, are quite amazing. Think having your own rooftop deck where you can sit in the moonlight on the Mississippi River and view the skyline across the river from a large city skyline, and where the next morning you can read the paper and glance at paddling kayakers making their way along the River. The dining room is really lovely with starched table cloths and hearty breakfasts.
Be prepared to understand that you can't park next to boats. The parking for the Covington is in a public park next to the river and we had to park way away from the boat and make many trips to empty a full car with no help. After driving for hundreds of miles this just wasn't fun. Also be aware that rooms on boats are compact. We knew when we booked that the larger rooms were booked but the fish-eye type photos on the website gave little clue of the tininess of the space we had reserved. This is not a place for tall guests with lots of luggage. The tiny bathroom with a pullman type fold up toilet was quaint but the dribble of water falling from the shower didn't work for us. Be aware also that boats have spiders. There were lots of webs and spiders lining the outside decks but most stayed outside.
The owner was out of town and left the place in the hands of some genial attendants. We had counted on the B&B to provide us with basic directions, tips and recommendations for our first Twin Cities visit, but unfortunately they were unable to do so.
For about $160 we felt the whole experience was a poor value and were glad to get out of there. I'd like to be able to compliment the adventurous owner of a tugboat B&B in this age of impersonal chain lodging, but you have to be honest in these reviews.
