“Good breakfast”
Reviewed February 20, 2011

I've stayed here several times when visiting the Mayo Clinic on business. Staff are efficient and considerate. The breakfast is excellent.

My husband and I stayed here 4 nights in February 2011. We arrived around 10am and were told that we could not check in until 12pm, unless we wanted to pay $50 for an early check in. We've stayed at Marriott hotels for years and have never run into this before. We showed back up at the desk at noon and checked in right away. Be aware that there is an unfriendly employee who mans the desk during the day. We found her to have an unpleasant tone in her voice and was very condescending and short each time we had to interact with her, someone like this has no business working at a hotel connected to the Mayo Clinic. Upon check in we were given our room keys without a mention of the concierge lounge despite having platinum status - after remind her, we were given new keys with access to the "lounge." The concierge lounge is currently undergoing renovations and is currently located on the 4th floor overlooking the pool and gym courtyard area. For breakfast, there was a small selection of bread, muffins, and bagels, cereal, eggs, bacon, grits, and fruit. (This free breakfast is only available to those who have access to the concierge lounge.) Coffee, tea, bottled water, apples, oranges and bananas were available at all times in the concierge lounge. In the evening there was one hot dish, which usually had three things in it (for example, one night was grilled chicken, pasta, and sausage). The evening food left something to be desired. When asking for a room, ask for one overlooking the street rather than the interior courtyard, unless you enjoy watching people swim, workout or eat in the concierge lounge. The hotel is also undergoing renovations (probably of the real concierge lounge). We were witness to loud drilling, sawing, and pounding intermittently through the day from about 9am to 4pm. Some of the ceiling plaster near our window came down due to the construction which seemed to be directly above our room. The best thing about this Marriott was its close location to the Mayo Clinic. It is definitely the best place to stay in terms of location if you are visiting the clinic. The great part is that everything is connected with tunnels and skywalks. We did not have to go outside during our 5 days there. There are small shops and restaurants located in the tunnels and through the skywalks. Don't expect a huge shopping area in the tunnels, but there is enough to keep you occupied for maybe an hour. The Marriott also has a bar and restaurant on the lobby level, but we did not eat there during our stay. Internet is available for around $10 per day, we had it free because of the platinum status. Our room was a typical Marriott room, we have a king as our preference, but were given two queens. We were told that they were oversold on king rooms and that a king room was only our "preference" and not a "request." We also had a mini fridge in our room, but no microwave and there was also not a microwave in the concierge lounge. We took a 15-20 minute cab to and from the airport for a cost of $25 each way (before tip). Once they finish construction of a new concierge lounge, this will be a better place to stay.

In contrast to most visitors, my visit had nothing to do with medical treatment at the Mayo Clinic. This hotel is within walking (or wheelchair) distance of the Clinic.

The rooms and facilities are pretty average Marriott hotel. The bed was a little soft but OK. The hotel is connected via above and below ground walkways to the Kahler hotel across the street and thereby the Clinic and Kahler parking. This is where you park your car, in a tight, nasty little structure. If you have a big vehicle, I suggest you use valet parking and then check your SUV for scrapes, etc.

The staff varied from cordial to slightly surly. (The phone staff was nice; the reception desk staff cool.) They really didn't like the fact that I parked my own car rather than using valet service. Getting from the Marriott to the nearby parking structure was a bit of a challenge with Rochester's one-way streets, pedestrian malls, etc. (Watch out for wheelchairs!)

As far as Wi Fi is concerned -- the hotel charges $10 a day or so but you may be able to "borrow" wi fi from the Mayo Clinic nearby. It is very slow but enough for email.

There is convenient shopping in the area -- some on the lower level and in a nearby mall and business district.

Although this is a bit pricey location if you are on a budget, it fits the bill if you are a patient at the Clinic or on an expense account.

Pluses: valet parking, never having to go outside to visit the Clinic

Minuses: New York, LA and D.C. pricing -- probably because of location. No free internet

I stayed on the Concierge Floor of the Marriott for 4 nights during a visit to Mayo.
I paid $256.00/nt AAA rate, plus $15.00 valet parking/ night, plus $9.95/ night for wireless access in the room. The internet fee is ridiculous.
The bedrooms are very nice. Clean white comfortable bedding, feather pillows which I was able to request by email, very clean rooms, flat screen TV.
The bathrooms are nice looking but not well lit with no makeup mirror. There is a vanity/sink area just outside the bathroom for an extra person.
The TV situation was not great. As others have noted this is not HD TV-- and not even as good as regular cable. Two channels stopped working altogether, and I asked to have the TV fixed while gone. This was not done, although a call to the front desk resolved the problem. The next day, same TV problem.
The doors to the hall have absolutely no soundproofing although I did not hear any room to room noise.
The Concierge floor runs around $30.00 more than the regular floors. Breakfast is fine.
The evening selections serve as dinner for many people on the floor. Just be sure to get there at 5, as it goes quickly and takes a while to replenish. Wine and beer cost extra.
Daily housekeeping was below par. It would have been nice to come back to a neat room each day. Shams were left on the floor, amenities not replaced.
This hotel is very nice , close to Mayo, and comfortable. There were a couple of irritations that marred the stay.
Having stayed at the Doubletree last visit, I would be likely to try it again, as I did not feel so nickeled and dimed, and I think it would be less expensive for a similar experience. The only issue is that it is just a smidge farther from Mayo, although all the hotels seem to run a car service over to the clinic.

I traveled to Rochester to see my niece take the lead role in the local high school musical and wanted to avoid staying on the couch and relatives at my brother’s house. Figuring Rochester would be quiet on the weekend I checked into the Marriott attached to the Mayo Medical Center. Little did I know Rochester was filled with families for wrestling, volleyball and even table tennis tournaments. Even though the hotel was jammed, it was peaceful and the beds were so comfortable I wanted to strap in on the roof of my SUV and take it home. Service was great, I was in an out in a matter of minutes. The room was spacious, spotless, with a generous bathroom, sure beats my brother’s home and barking dog.

We stayed at the Hotel for five days on the Concierge level while viisting the Mayo Clinic. The service was very good, the staff was most pleasant, and we enjoyed the food in the hotel's restaurant. The lighting is not great in the rooms and the workout area is not in an ideal area as it is in an atrium which was quite cold . The location is very convenient to the Mayo. Since we were there in zero.degree weather, the fact that we didn't have to go outside was welcome.

the cost of the room and the prices in the restaurant were higher than we thought they should be, but allin all the hotel was very nice and we would stay there again.
