Attraction details
Owner description: Built in 1927, the Chateau was one of the most elaborate theatres built in Rochester in the early 1900s. The exterior sunburst design marquee is lit with 636 light bulbs. Its unique French Village decor includes interior balconies and turrets and, on the ceiling, stars in the night sky. Refurbished in 1994, this elegant old theatre now houses a Barnes and Noble Bookstore and Starbucks Cafe.

Miss this venue! Be it a Barnes and Noble or not, I can't wait to step back in someday in the future!

Half of the reviews for this activity relate to the old theater building, and half are for the new 14-screen cinema on the outskirts of town. Part of what attracted us was the prospect of watching a movie from a recliner in a 1927 theater. That is not possible. The cinema is fine, and the seats are comfortable. The beer is good. The movies showing are current and a great selection. That said, this is NOT the 1927 building, and you cannot walk to it from downtown hotels.

My children call this the "comfy seats" theater. Generally, our family only goes to the first showing of a movie here, as a special treat, since they are more expensive. The recliners ARE very comfortable. But since the recliners take up more space, it has reduced the number of seats available for each movie. New movies almost always sell out, so online reservations are a good idea, even though they're more expensive.

We were long-term lovers of the "old" Chateau Theater, which really did look like a chateau. Very quaint. And we loved its central "down town" location. But even after deserting the main scene, we still find the new Chateau our favorite of the now three movie houses in Rochester. It is the least expensive and very comfortable. And the drive back and forth from "old Southwest" takes only 15 minutes.
