Owner description: Built in 1927, the Chateau was one of the most elaborate theatres built in Rochester in the early 1900s. The exterior sunburst design marquee is lit with 636 light bulbs. Its unique French Village decor includes interior balconies and turrets and, on the ceiling, stars in the night sky. Refurbished in 1994, this elegant old theatre now houses a Barnes and Noble Bookstore and Starbucks Cafe.

While other reviews here are about the modern Chateau Theaters at a strip mall location, this review is of the one pictured at 15 1st St. SW. This is a classic theater of the 1920's that has been converted to a Barnes and Noble book store, which is itself worth a visit. The current tenant has retained what were the old walls and ceiling of the original theater, designed to make one feel as if he/she is inside the atrium of a medieval castle. The ceiling is lighted like the night sky, with stars twinkling overhead. Even the ticket booth and concessions stands, now check-out counters, are left as they were in the original theater. The location is on Peace Plaza and connects to the skyway system of downtown Rochester and Mayo Clinic. Because it's one of the few remaining classic theater interiors, It's worth a stop even if you are not looking for a book to read!

What was once a beautiful theater, is now a beautiful bookstore! The atmosphere is perfect for browsing with a coffee in hand.

Seats were comfortable, popcorn fresh and sound/picture quality excellent. Often movie theaters are somewhat cold for my wife, but the air temp was just right.

Movies star on time, elevated seating, food and wine...you can have usual movie fare plus a selection of entree type of food. Convenient location for people at mayo. Clean bathrooms. Good family environment.

This was a very nice theater. The seats are huge! There is a bar if you want to have a drink before your movie. I did not get anything from the snack bar, but it seemed very typical. We were there on a Friday night and spent less than $20 so it was a good value for me!
