This cafe is a great place for a burger, beef or salmon, and fries, servings are generous, food is served piping hot, outdoor seating is charming and intimate, service unhurried and cost is moderate. We visit this restaurant each time we visit Rochester

The homemade bread with pesto was delicious and the garlic and white wine mussels were likewise. My favorite was the ginger peach glazed salmon and my buddy's Rosemary Chicken was moist, tender and excellent. LOVE the strung lights of the alleyway seating; felt like Little Italy during a festival. The candles are a lovely touch and the whole is incredibly relaxing and peaceful, as well as having some of the best food we've ever eaten.

City Cafe is a great place to eat & is close to the Mayo Clinic. It's in the downtown area and is a charming spot to eat. I like eating there but it isn't quite the experience when dining with my grandkids that I prefer.

The food is great and the cost is reasonable. I recommend fish or seafood dishes but everything on the menu looks great. If the weather is nice, sit on the patio in the alley.

On a recent trip to Mayo Clinic we happened upon the City Cafe one evening and had an excellent dinner of "Maple Roasted Chicken Breast which is served atop sharp vermont white cheddar fondue and topped with fresh greens, red onions, cranberries, pecans, garlic mashed potatoes & a warm bacon vinaigrette" and the wonderful "City Seafood Stew" which includes sautéed fresh mussels, whole clams, clam pieces, bay shrimp, tiger shrimp, and fresh fish all simmered in a creamy tomato sauce with fresh herbs & spices, then served with fresh garlic butter bread.". Both were fantastic and beautifully presented. I've attached a picture of the Seafood Stew. We liked City Cafe so much that we went back a second time and had "Grilled Fresh Scallops with Apple Cider Beurre Blanc direct from the East Coast served with sautéed sweetened apple slices, bleu cheese mashed potatoes, and drizzled with apple cider beurre blanc" and "Fresh Grilled Tuna Tacos in blue cornmeal shells topped with Jack cheese & onion, with mango salsa and tomatillo cream sauce served with creamy black bean rice." The food tastes even better than the descriptions conjure up in your mind! Again the food was beautifully presented. The third time we went (in the same week I must confess) we had
"Sesame Crusted Seared Rare Tuna drizzled with a spicy lime sauce served with wasabi, pickled ginger, julienne cucumber, red pepper and sweet white rice" (picture attached) and had the City Seafood Stew a second time. The portion sizes of all of the meals we tried were generous, and there is unlimited bread served with olive oil infused with pesto--yummy. The weather was lovely and we were able to eat on the terrace outside all three nights. It was lively without being loud, and we never encountered a single mosquito. And it stayed light until close to 9:00 PM which has nothing to do with the cafe but it made the evenings even more enjoyable. The wait staff were delightful: young, enthusiastic, and attentive without being intrusive. The cafe is in a beautifully restored old building in downtown Rochester just a few blocks from Mayo Clinic. Neither my husband nor I could think of one thing that could have been better on any of the three evenings we dined there. We only had dessert one night and shared the "Big City Chocolate Cake" which is described as moist, chocolately layers piled high, filled with a rich, chocolately cream cheese whip, then covered in chocolate ganache and served with thick hot fudge and a creamy scoop of vanilla ice cream." This is meant for two but the two of us couldn't come close to finishing it--it was enormous! The waitress assured us that people sometimes actually do finish it but perhaps they have it FOR dinner rather than after. All in all a wonderful restaurant where we could go back many more times and find more things we know we would enjoy.
