We stayed at the St. James Hotel for a romantic getaway. It was fabulous. We did the self-guided tour and enjoyed learning more about its history and all the unique items. We also enjoyed all three restaurants: The Port for dinner, Jimmy's for drinks and live music, and then the Veranda for breakfast. We loved all three, but I think the Veranda is my favorite, with its beautiful view of the Mississippi and outdoor seating. This hotel is so quaint and cozy - you cannot help but relax and enjoy yourself. As for the rooms, we found the beds with the handmade quilts to be very comfortable and we both slept like a rock. The rooms are nice size, and in the room we had, the "Minnesota", the bathroom was huge! It also had a large jetted tub. There were also nice robes to use. We had a great view of the bluffs from our room and also of the river. Wifi is free and easy to use, there's a flat screen TV and iPhone charger for you as well. Parking is attached and it's free too. Be sure to save some time for your tour and also to shop at the shops in the St. James. All of the stores are worth a visit, ranging from high end women's clothing to beautiful home decor, and even a spa where you can get a massage. By the way, you can also stop down at Clara's early to get a good cup of coffee if you are an early riser like me. One other tip, be sure to go up to the 5th floor as there is an expansive view of the river from there! There are some great shops downtown Red Wing too, so walk around and shop! Also, take a stroll at the Levee Park right along the river (which is right by the St. James Hotel).

Room Tip: All rooms are unique, but if there is a certain view you want, just be sure to ask for that.

If you need a place to relax and enjoy yourself St. James Hotel in Red Wing is the place to go. It is such a diamond! We especially love to sit by the windows when we dine at the Veranda and enjoy the view of the grand Mississipi river in all it's glory! This historic hotel is a must do!
P.S. Thank you to the crew for giving us such wonderful service while we were there!

Room Tip: Call the hotel and ask! The live to serve!

Had a corner room on the 4th floor with marvelous views of the charming town of Red Wing and the river. It was a girls' week-end and the other rooms were very nice also. Because the building is old, there is a little wear in some places-like the carpet-but overall the hotel is in great condition. They have a brochure which enhances your tour of historic features of the hotel. Staff, with the exception of the front desk receptionist, was friendly and caring. We also enjoyed the spa which is excellent. Sunday brunch was at best forgettable and was the only part I would not recommend. We tried the bar on the 5th floor and the one in the basement and both were lots of fun.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room on an upper floor.

St. James is a beautifully restored hotel in the charming small town of Red Wing, MN. Beautiful views of the bluffs, lot's of dining and shopping options within the hotel. Many fun shops & restaurants within walking distance too. On a cold weekend you never have to leave. I've never stayed here in the summer but I can imagine it's wonderful.

The Veranda for breakfast is always good in lovely setting. Jimmy's Bar is beautiful with good taps and decent bar type food. The Port is nice but we tend to stay away as it's sometimes stuffy and we like a fun vibe. Front desk staff not very helpful and don't seem to know about what's going on in the area when asked questions about the area. They seem smug and untrained. No valet or help with bags either. Beds are comfy .

Room Tip: Inquire about the view

Beautifully restored old hotel. Each room is individualized with lovely antiques and handmade quiilt coverlets. The staff was wonderful and there are plentuy of nice shops if it is too cold to go out. Nothing better in winter than to settle in by the fire in the library with a cup of coffee.

My husband and I stayed at the St. James last year and had nothing but amazing things to say about it. The room was gorgeous and the staff were great. This year, we had an entirely different experience. We called the hotel before arriving and asked if there were any upgrades available. There were none and we were fine with that as we were just excited to stay here again. After we checked in we were told our room had been upgraded. We're were excited and headed to our room. As we moved from the desk we were told our room was on the other side of the hotel. The new portion. Not the historic side we had loved so much the previous year. We enter our room to find what they called a bay window. It was a small window that was frosted over with ice. Our room had 2 full beds, not the 1 queen we had requested. We put our worries aside and settled in. Within an hour we were both woken up by trains outside our window. The next hour, same thing. And again. This continued ALL NIGHT LONG the following morning we asked the desk if there was any way we could have another room. The answer was no as the hotel was full. We were also given some line on how many people like the noise. I highly doubt that. We went about our day and that afternoon a friend of ours who was staying there also broke something in their room. Well, what do you know. They had an extra room for them. This infuriated us. So they had an extra room, just not for a couple who had been kept awake all night on their first weekend away form their kids in a year. Why couldn't they give us that room and clean ours to use as a spare? As expected, the next night we were kept awake by trains ALL NIGHT. at the desk the following morning, we felt as through we we're begin made out to look like we were over reacting. They were apologetic, but it was hard to know if it was sincere. We left feeling drained and pissed. We have a 2 and 4 year old at home, this was suppose to be time away and we felt more exhausted than we do when one of them is sick. Never was a discount offered, which to be honest offended os even more. I'm saddened as I loved this hotel. My opinion has changed and unfortunately I will no longer be telling my friends how amazing this hotel is..

Room Tip: Do not sleep on the new side of the hotel. Ask specifically to be placed on the historic side, or yo...

I have stayed at the St. James on a number of occasions. This is a historic hotel that offers charm and is very popular on weekends as a wedding reception location.

Rooms are nice, but remember that each is unique, so ask questions. What size bed does the room have? Does it have a closet? A shower?

The Port is their formal dining option, with a limited menu and predominately red meat. The Veranda is more family friendly and offers lighter fare. My favorite spot to visit is Jimmy’s. The Pub is located upstairs and offers a warm, friendly atmosphere, tasty food and a knowledgeable, friendly staff.

Room Tip: I recommend upgrading to a suite if possible, but there are many different options.
