“St. James is the Place to Stay”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

We just returned from a very nice stay at the St. James Hotel in Red Wing. I was a little hesitant to stay here, as I've done other "grand old hotels" and been disappointed with how run down they were. Not so with the St. James. Someone is not afraid to spend money on the hotel - and it shows. I was amazed at the number of staff people we saw everywhere in the hotel, and their labors are not unnoticed. The rooms were impeccible, the decor truly period and yet well cared for. Our bed was very comfortable and the linens were very nice. From the toiletries to the bathrobes in the rooms to the champagne they sent up to help us celebrate our anniversary - everything was perfect! (Carpet in the hallway of the fourth floor needs to be replaced, but looking around, it's obvious that will be happening soon as all the other floors appear to have new carpet.) Our windows overlooked Main Street and we thought it a lovely view. Our breakfast in the Veranda Cafe was delicious. Looking forward to our next visit!

We stayed at the St. JamesHotel Labor Day weekend. Could not have been more thrilled with the room, amenities and old world charm of the hotel. They have done a great job of capturing the historic feel, with modern touches. I highly recommend this place, but, the staffer working the front desk was having a bad afternoon and evening when we were there. She was rude, dismissive and scared a few guests into simply seeking assistance elsewhere. We we shocked someone so anti-social was in a key service position. If you can ignore the big city rudeness of the front desk lady, you will certainly enjoy the small town charm of this hotel and town.

Room Tip: Great river view rooms available.

We didn't have a reservation but because we were travelling in the middle of the week we were able to get a room. Our room was beautiful, comfortable and very clean. The hotel staff were all very friendly and went out of their way to make you feel at home. We had dinner in The Port dining room and it was very good. We enjoyed our stay so much that we decided to stay an extra night.

We were greeted professionally. We were given a room facing the river and the train tracks. After reading other reviews I was worried about train noise but I wasn't bothered by any noise. I loved the view. The room was lovely and the bed was comfortable. I could have walked around the hotel all day admiring the beautiful woodwork and historic charm. There is free good coffee in the lobby in the morning.

An old hotel which shares its history well and is very interesting; fabulous stories, furniture, pictures and an old organ and grand piano. The in-hotel shops were nice and the Spa was excellent. The room was comfortable, with lovely dressing gowns provided and excellent toiletries (AVEDA). Be aware that the railway line (on which there are regular very long and very noisy trains) is directly behind the hotel. On the other side is the main street which has quite a lot of traffic.

In comparison with other hotels we stayed in during our trip, the service was not quite up to standard (good but not great). Some of the staff were excellent but it was a hit and a miss.

We ate in Jimmy's Pub twice and the food was very good. Sadly we didn't manage to eat in 'The Port', as it looked fabulous the evening we visited the bar, but they were not open the following evening.

Arrival at the hotel was a bit of a nightmare. When we got in the lift from the car park there is no signage telling you where reception is. Even when you get out at the floor where reception is located, there is still nothing letting you know you are in the right place. This would probably be ok if it wasn't such a rabbit's warrent. There are 4 lift locations in the hotel and you have to know which one you need.

We stayed one night in this lovely old-fashioned hotel. We were sorry we couldn't stay longer and ramble around the place, looking at all the history this hotel has to offer. It's not some place you should stay where you can't take your time and enjoy it. Unfortunately that was our situation so we really want to go back again when we're in the area.

The room was decorated as old Victorian, but the amenities were very modern and the bed was extremely comfortable! I slept the entire night without getting up once!

There is free parking here which is good, because the clerk told me that you get a ticket if you park on the street overnight in Red Wing.

The hotel is on the "main drag" and close to everything you want to see and do in Red Wing. We were there to visit a friend so were unable to explore the area on foot as we would have liked. However, this is what you should do if you stay here.

We definitely have to come back!!!!

We stayed two nights but it felt like longer. We spent most of our time in the hotel. Shopping, restaurants, spa and more. It was very romantic. My husband and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and I could not have imagined a better place to spend it. The staff was very friendly.
